Largest Functional Tire Without Mods

Mostly likely a question that will get a lot of “Why would you want do that?” comments but has anyone fitted 285/65 on the stock 18” alloys? I would like a little more width and a touch more sidewall height as I think this size works out to around 32.6” tire which is ideal for me as I’m not looking for supersized balloon tires or end up with the Tonka toy truck look. I plan on keeping the vehicle suspension stock and down the road may entertain a second set of 17” aftermarket wheels for off-road duty but I’m open to other suggestions.

… wanting to vet out cost of upgraded clutch packs and tune the only thing we could find was that the clutch packs are the beefed up ones


How was this determination made? Did you examine them directly? Is it a ZF or BMW part number, or other?

oh that is great then, Dumb question number two does the MT 255/85/17 fit on the stock steel wheels and still work or do I need to buy a set of OWL wheels?
No need to purchase new wheels. I just had them installed on my truck and they look great on stockn17” steel wheels. I’ll post a pic. They are also not any louder than the BF Goodrich’s. I am sure my gas mileage will suffer. Truck looks so much better! The proportions are right now!

Hello ladies,

Anyone know what the largest tire size is that can be used without rubbing, binding, and without cutting the vehicle to make it fit?

I'm also wondering if there are any options out there for upper control arm replacement to properly lift the truck say... 4 inches, while retaining correct angles.

Lastly... I see that spare tire upgrade size will likely be limited by the left rear access door needing room to open before the right side... looks like about 2 inches further would be the max...?
I just been through this exercise. I would say that Mickey Thompson 255/85/17 A/T tires are the largest without a lift. I did not want to lift my truck because of the issues with the drive shaft, thus, I went with these. The tire is actually 34.6” which some say is taller than typical 35” tires. The width is around 10” which is less than a 285/75/17. I’m told that these do rub because of the extra 2.5”’s. I am very happy with these …
I did purchase a relocation bracket from Owl in order for the rear door to open. I did have to purchase three 14m x 1.5 50mm bolts as the ones in n the kit do not allow you to mount the tire in reverse. I wanted to keep the original tire cover , thus, the reason for the longer bolts. The ones supplied are too short.

I guess at the end of the end it’s all a matter of preference. I have a set of 285/65/18 on my DISCO II and it looks great! Proportions are spot on. On my Grenadier I always felt that the stock size didn’t look right. I wish the truck would have come with a little larger tire, however, I understand that they were probably concerned with gas mileage and availability concerns world wide with bigger tires, thus, choose a common size that is readily available. I too was a little concerned about going too big or lifting the car, thus, I went with 255/85/17’s. These tires are slightly thinner than the original. They are about 10”, thus fit inside the wheel well. They are a 34.6 in height and I feel make the truck look much better proportionately speaking while not having the tires stick out of the wells. These fit without any lift and do not rub at all even when fully articulated.

Fantastic. I really want the 255/85 but not particularly drawn to the Mickey tread pattern. Have you driven them in mud?
No, I particularly went with MT because min snow up in big bear and was told these work better than BFG’s. I’ll probably find out soon. Although personally I don’t mind the aggressive thread pattern. I also wanted a 10 “ tire.

Looks like you are in Pasadena as well and maybe an home in Big Bear. Our second home is in Lake Arrowhead. Are cars are twins including the tires. Let’s hit the trails!

Called who and asked for what kit?
My performance shop that works with a transmission shop. They built my ZF in my M8 before, they called their rep with ZF there isn't a factory upgrade clutch kit like many have. The one in the Ineos stems from the same one used on the V12 7 series of old 50series but its gen3. 8HP51 which base starts at around 380-400tq numbers. There are a few aftermarket companies that can build kits but I'm not hunting that down, since there seems to be no need. However this transmission rocks 4 gear sets and 2 brakes and 3 clutch packs. ZF states this gen three is considered their heavy duty model, hence when we tried to source a higher pressure clutch packs they don't offer any they are already their higher pressure packs. Sorry I thought this stuff was well known should have considered adding a bit more detail in the first post. But basically as I build my cars and now SUV :) I always try to understand what potential week links there are, with automatic transmissions 100% of the time its the clutch packs which are somewhat easy swap for a good shop and you can take a limited say 500tq transmission to well over 1000tq for couple grand well add labor too.

Thanks for the input… I did run across this setup looking around online 275/70 on the stock 18” alloys. I think it’s a really nice balance of a little extra muscle, ground clearance while maintaining an overall stock look. I just wish they made this size of the KO3s in blackwall as I’m not a big fan of reversing the tires to hide the white lettering. I like the OEM+ concept without going over the top but everyone’s styles are different and that’s okay.

This is a fascinating discussion and I hope you guys can move it over to the more relevant form that covers the transmission. I’ve been very interested in the gearbox. It seems like with all the code numbers that it is the same thing as a supra, interesting that it actually is modified.
It kind of makes sense since most everything else on the vehicle is over engineered, just using the stock transmission would have been out of character.
