Hi there. Hope someone out there can help with a few questions relating to shipping my car from the UK to Iceland for four weeks of holiday this summer:

(1). Has anyone (other than Sir Jim) taken their car over to Iceland - would love to learn of your experiences, the ‘dos and the don’t’.

(2). Any advice on shipping the car and therefore leaving it unattended wrt the battery life and the typical 2% battery charge degradation per day?

(3). Any experience on getting Marine Insurance. The quote I have from the shipping company is £500 each way which seems a bit steep.

Many thanks

Hi,

I asked some Icelanders that I deal with regularly. One of them ships his car from Iceland to continental europe as he has house in Italy where he spends much of the summer and he responded as follows:

As to the car, I had a quote from Smyril line for a car from Iceland to Rotterdam, return. (roro ferry)
The quote was around 1600 gbp, no insurance included though.
The freight companies here are oligopolies and normally charge an arm and a leg.

Not directly relevant to your questions but might be of passing interest to you.

Hi @Gwynne I'm also going to Iceland this year with the Norröna/Smyril Line. On my last trip in 2007, they also took passengers on board in Scotland. However, they have changed the route and are sailing directly from Denmark with a stop on the Faroe Islands. Would that also be an option for you? Are you from England?

Hi Rovie, NTMU and yes I’m from the UK.

That’s certainly an option and also looking at shipping out in a container from Teesport.
