Gas tank skid plate surface rust

Hi all,

I'm about to install my gas tank skid plate from rival. I was under the car preparing for it and I noticed some, not a ton of surface rust on the stock skid plate from being bashed and scraped. Should I put on some rust converter on it before I install the rival aluminum skid plate on top? Any brand (USA) recommended? I would probably prefer to brush it on.

Probably a good idea while you have easy access. Be sure to rub back and check the edges around the rust areas as well. Rust tends to travel under loose paint.

While you are in that area would you please have a look at your forward inner tank mount (pic). I am sitting on this until my vehicle is next at the agent. It looks like a cracked mount tab but I think it's just that weld through on the back of the pipe to plate join has bowed the plate so when Pierre, Jacques or Madeline installed the bolt it bent the foot and cracked the paint.
I'm interested if this is a one-off issue or a wider production fault. The tank frame is still secure.

PS: you can see in this pic how the surface rust travelled under the paint before it flaked off.

Oh there's a problem with the paint for sure but I'm interested in the crack line. It seems like the flat of the tab has been bent up by the bolt which has initiated a paint crack. Hopefully nothing more. I'm assuming this is enamel paint but it's possibly a poor powder coat which may explain the lack of primer. The rest of the (coating) has flaked due to poor adhesion.
Some of what you see was scratched off by my fingernail while I was testing for a metal crack. Not much access there up and I'm not ready to disassemble to investigate.
I will run the bolt out and see what I discover.

Ha! I saw the same video on his steering knuckles. Good pickup and outcome for him.
I qualified in the dye penetrant inspection method during my early aviation years. I can borrow a set of spray cans if need be, but I think if it's cracked that will be evident when I pull the bolt out.

Nice thread. I'll take a look at my bolts. I looked at the whole area last weekend and i saw nothing like what you have then but i'll look more closely. I did check all the mounts since the new bashplate replaces a few of the mounts with longer mounts that the additional plate hangs off.
