I can't believe it, after ~5 years...I received the call at 1645. My Grenadier preorder arrived at the dealership after 66 days in the Port of Tacoma. I was told the last hold up was my battery cover, which was missing and the port was waiting on a replacement part in order to release.

EB opens at 0900. I am planning on being down there in the morning to take the plastic off, stickers and inspections, etc. I am a bit worried about the dual battery health. But I am excited to see the car. It has 10 miles on the odometer.

Wish me luck! This delay didn't just impact me :) 🙏

How did it go? I'm sure your battery was fine.

That is interesting. I'm going to fight it using this code. No where does it say we need to have a open bed. Indicate the payload is same as most midsized pick up trucks and tow capacity exceeds pickups.

I need to try to find the registration for my 4runner which I'm pretty sure was a truck. If that's the case the Ineos should be for sure. You used to be able to tell based on the number layout on the plates but I think they got rid of that a while ago.

Body on frame maybe the big push for it is a truck.

The whole system is a mess but somehow that fits for Washington. The RTA gets funded by taxing everyone who has a car so they can build a light rail system. Once built people exploit and use the service for free. It would make more sense to me if they'd do serious fare enforcement so they could profit and eventually lower the taxes, but that "wouldn't be fair".

Well well... I wonder if this is something I can correct at the DOL.

That’s usually the first thing I remove on a new vehicle. Pretty smart on their part.

Pretty easy to remove and then pop back on before the runs but lazy folks will just let it be and give away some free advertising.

I called DOL and they said "You'll have to ask your manufacturer since that's what is on the title application." Since I assumed the title application was done by EB, I emailed their title agent who responded that her "X5 is a passenger vehicle" and referred me to their licensing agency. Their agency said "your 4Runner registration was wrong and it should have also been a passenger vehicle. A truck has a bed." I quoted WA RCW 46.04.653 to her that states a truck is primarily for hauling property and she shrugged it off.

I think we need to pull in the head of sales into this conversation because they can sell more if we don't have the RTA attached.

That's why I went directly to their title agent since she's the one who applied for the title and may do the same for any other buyers. I think she's probably the one who would need to come around before anything changes.

Basically nobody wants to help and sends me somewhere else, everyone sounds irritated when I ask for clarification, and I'm probably SOL. I disagree wholeheartedly with the 4runner being registered incorrectly. If anyone has been in WA long enough they'll remember when "trucks" had the first and last characters on the plate as a letter. Grand Cherokees, 4Runners, Land Cruisers, etc all had the truck layout. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with the vehicle as a whole, but having to pay $900 per year because people can't read and don't listen pisses me off.

Elliott Bay title clerk - zero stars
Washington DOL - zero stars
Wendel's Licensing - zero stars
Grenadier - five stars
I was hoping the answer would be here, but NHTSA classifies it as the following. I looked up My F150 just to see what NHTSA classifies it as and as expected clearly indicates its a truck. I hope there is something that can be done tho, pretty tired of the special things WA state does for us. $$$

Maybe that's why the DOL said to talk to the manufacturer first. He did say I could ask whoever filled out the title application though

$900 per year!? A Montana LLC would pay itself off quickly. Nevermind the absence (or at least greatly reduced burden) of the initial sales/registration tax.

Edit: forgive my ignorance on the process, this title application was completed by the dealer on your behalf and submitted to the DMV? In other states I've submitted the paperwork myself after the dealer prepping it for me - doc fee be damned.

On this truck designation issue - I thought the primary concern was the weight of the vehicle? I spoke with a ford dealer in Olympia that said F150s get the RTA penalty but not F250s or "super duty" model/trim and it was all to do with 6,000 lbs being a cut off.

Yeah I'm thinking about doing an LLC and selling the car to the business but since these fees are spent already I have all year to look into it. The dealer does the forms. Washington is capped at $199 for doc fees which I feel is reasonable. Zero would be awesome but the state set the cap so that's what you pay everywhere. Unfortunately it's not just 6000 lbs as a cutoff for the state. It's vehicle classification. They have an estimator that I used and the options (other than commercial, off-road, etc) were car or truck. Chose truck and it said my fees would be $38. My buddy with diesel F350s says he's paid RTA on those but I'm not sure what that's about.

Is the RTA only applicable for certain zip codes? I’m in unincorporated king county and I have not had to pay RTA on any of my vehicles (x3 Land Cruisers, Audi Q5, Dodge 2500)
