I went to pull the trigger on a TDI tuner this morning for my Trialmaster. At check out, they don't list California as a shipping destination. There is nothing on the website that says they don't sell to California, but you simply can't select California as a state at checkout.

I reached out to them directly to find out if there was some prohibition, or maybe they just don't like California. I will update you as I know more or perhaps someone here has had a similar experience and knows this answer.

I'm actually doing this for the additional fuel economy opportunity. We're not going to get anywhere near what the BMWs are getting but I suspect I can get an additional 20% and a bit more power and torque.

From their website

California Air Resources Board (carb).
Our products are not to be used in California unless a specific Executive Order has been issued for your vehicle. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulates aftermarket parts and has regulations that place all emissions related aftermarket automobile parts into various categories. Executive Order Parts are aftermarket parts that CARB have evaluated and determined do not adversely impact emissions, and thereby are granted an Executive Order (EO), which allows the part to be sold and used on specified automobiles for on-road, off-road, on or off public highway use in California. At this time TDI Tuning do not have such Executive Orders and therefore prohibit the use of our aftermarket tuning devices for use in California.

It is your responsibility to comply with all applicable federal and state laws relating to the use of equipment supplied by TDI Tuning for both on-road, off-road, on or off public highway use. TDI Tuning hereby disclaims any liability resulting from the failure to use our products in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws.

By installing and or using our products you agree to the terms of use as stated above.

It does appear that more countries and states are clamping down on anything that affects emissions, I read about a US remapper being fined several millions for modifying vehicles recently. Also I note for example the French bi-annual roadworthiness test will be using specialised equipment to so if a vehcile has been remapped as well as gutted cats and dpf deletes. It is only a matter of time before this spreads more widely.

Did I see that California are banning gasoline lawnmowers, hedge cutters etc?

Not banning private jets for some reason.
Yep. The state has essentially declared war on the petrochemical industry. Even gas-fired water heaters and stoves are on their list.

All the while our governor has one of the largest carbon footprints on the planet. He loves taking a helicopter and here there and everywhere.

Find a buddy out of state and ship it there -

I'm not planning on doing this for the horsepower, I am looking for more torque down low for better fuel economy so I might never go beyond setting 3. That said, everything I read about these fellows tells me they are the most well-regarded tuner platform for the B58 in terms of safety and reliability.

As far as it being safe, BMW released this engine to various platforms as the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), as a 340-horse version dubbed ML for middle power level, while the other 374-to-388-horsepower variant is referred to as OL for upper level, and both fall under the broader designation of B58TU1.

Everything I can find on the B58TU1 indicates they can be tuned to North of 400 hp. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, and this is not a 330 series BMW weighing in at 62% more than the 3700 pound sedan. This added weight imposes added stress on the engine and transmission.

Ineos tells us peak torque of our B58 begins at about 1700 RPM. Tuning this engine can bring peak torque on at around just below 1400 rpm. Therein lies an opportunity to increase fuel economy by what TDI claims can be 15%.

The Grenadier's advertised fuel consumption is a combined 14 city / 14 highway. On my last 800 mile I observed an average / combined consumption of 17.9 mpg at an average speed of 56 mph.

My goal is to bump that to 20.5 mpg by maximizing the increased hp and torque between 2500 and 3000 rpm. I actually think I can do a little bit better than that on the TDIs tuner settings 1 or 2, still below the ML B58TU1s original specification for horsepower and torque.

Thanks David, I worked it out. What are you seeing on average for power and torque or what does the sweet spot feel like?

As noted, my travels average 48-56 mph / 90 kph. I think I can squeeze 21-22 mpg out of the B58 by maximizing torque between 1600-1900 rpm at 55-65 mph.

I will do a roadtrip once whatever I ordered arrives.

If you are looking for max fuel economy set it to Level 1. One of my customers is getting 19MPG hand calculated on long drives in Florida at Level 1. I pair this or the Agile tuner and sell with the IO Pedal tuner. I see a huge difference when paired with our Kooks Exhaust system given it has less back flow. If you are interested in the IO Pedal tuner, I have those too and sold 3 this week. 704-682-9323 Thanks, David I do have to finish editing more videos of this as well for our YouTube channel.

Nice. Thanks for the imput. Once I leave the US headed South in to Baja the posted speed limit is 80/90 kpm or 50/56 mph which is where I noticed these things get the best gas mileage, or at least mine did. While that seems mind numbingly slow, the road is narrow and usually pretty bad for most of the 1000 miles to my village.
