When I start my Grenadier from cold (well, summer cold which is circa 20 deg C), the coolalt temperature gauge gets up to 90degC after only 1.5 miles. Anyone else noticed that? - the gauge cannot be showing an accurate reading.

Most modern engines will get up to temperature in a very short distance.

There is a two part cooling system look at thew BMW article on it looks quite sophisticated compared to old designs.

Many (although i'm not saying that the Grenny is one of the many) tempo gauges on cars are not that accurate, they effective show cold and then pretty much head to 'normal' quickly and then will sit still only showing HOT if there is a problem.
The 'bounce' or fluctuation is removed so that you don't panic when the temp climbs as you drive up a long hill whilst towing and fall when you cruise into cool air. It simply get to 'Nornal' and stays there... summer or winter.
Normal (or 90) probably has a real time range of between 50 and 120 C ....

Is the oil temperature any different ?

This ~ think how many kW of energy are released in a few minutes, and the efficiency of a ICE ~ there's so much thermal energy surplus.

The B58 is designed to heat up very quickly to lower emissions asap after starting.
Don't know squat about the diesel engine.
