Batwing Awning

I had a rhinorack batwing for a long time, but two covers perished in the WA sun. Mine didn't have the legs attached so you had to carry a pole bag, and the awning needed to poles and lifted in relatively light winds. Ended up not using as much as it was hassle for a quick lunch stop.

Ostrichwing looks good. Bush Company stuff is good but quite heavy, as are most free standing awnings. That rigidity only happens with extra bracing which means weight. So we're back to our old game of what compromises are you prepared to make? What else needs to be on the roof for your setup? That says what weight you have available for an awning and/or RTT... And lets not forget what all that weight does to centre of gravity!

I have just ordered an ostrich wing awning from Tuff-Trek. There are specific brackets for fitting an ostrich wing awning to a rhino rack pioneer platform and these are on order coming from South Africa. No rush as my roof rack is on back order from Ineos also. Hopefully it all comes in at the same time 🤞🏼

Any recommendations on a 270 degree awning? I like the look of the Bush Company one but its mighty expensive, double the price of some others. Has anyone used one? any other recommendations?
We published a head to head test of several popular brands some time ago.

Additionally, I was recently introduced to OLC Adventure, in Germany, and first impressions imply it is very sturdy. I just uploaded a preview for a show. I haven't had the opportunity to test it properly yet, but it is on my to-do list. I will post any findings.

I only have experience of two awnings. The first I had was an EEZI-AWN Bat 270 that buckled in the first wind and the other was an Ostrich wing 270 very robust but heavy and this is the make I’m going for again. The other brand i know people who have is The Bush Company awnings, again super robust but heavy.

Can we confirm that the Rhino Rack version is what is being offered in the US? The roof rack I understand is Front Runner.

James Baroud Falcon 270, I have this full setup on my teardrop, very sturdy, easy to setup, not cheap.

Thanks for the link. My biggest need is one that stands up to the winds of Colorado.

Clevershade is the lightest one I have seen for folks in OZ. I have seen a cool setup with two
180 awnings with a zippered filler for a 360 coverage. See video around 7.3 minute mark

Have the Clevershade 270, amazing and very well made in Aus from quality materials. Suspect it's the lightest this size and easy/quick 1 person installation and removal. The mounts of the awning slide into propriety crossbars and these utilise Rhino HD legs. Alternatively attach it to a platform. I don't own the company, just have the product.. :)

Where did you get the FR info?
I stand corrected on this. The FR info came from my driving event where they thought would be FR, but I hit up FR online just last week and they said that, although their European group had designed the roof racks to fit the IG, they would not be the OEM supplier. So I am now guessing Rhino but IG online chat could not confirm that.

Reviving this old thread... I'm ready to purchase a 270 awning and am motivated to so quickly, given looming tariffs here in the U.S. These things are absurdly expensive as it is, I don't want to get further behind.

By way of background, I had an Alu-Cab 270 on my Land Rover 110 and loved it... except it was a bit finicky to close up compared to the videos I've watched on the Bush Company and Ostrich versions. I like James Baroud quality, but don't like having to set up 5 poles, as they seem strategically placed in the way... the Ostrich has that extra single pole if it's windy and the front flap to cover the zipper seems useful as far as bug splat is concerned. As they are all pretty comparatively priced, I'm looking for recommendations from people that actually own and use them with some regularity.

Lastly, I had been inclined to get the RHS (passenger in the U.S.) version, but wonder if it would be better to have on the narrow door side (i.e. left)?... Without seeing in person, I have concerns about the sufficiency of coverage over the larger rear barn door - and as I plan to get one of the GP Factor tables, it would be nice to have full coverage over that side as well. Any strong opinions on one side over the other?

I plan to be mounting it on the Leitner basic cross bars (the $500.00 variety) - not a roof rack - with a RacksBrax HD hitch to make it removable.

Thanks for any insight or suggestions!

Here is the list from Australia, you may be able to use it as a starting point. I have a CLEVERSHADE 270 and they have a US Dealer: https://www.basilsgarage.com/

AWNINGS
It appears most awnings can be fitted to rooftop bars and the pioneer platform, but check before you buy.
  1. INEOS offer the Bat Wing Side Awning as an option;
  2. Bukkwakka Awnings, I have not seen on fitted to as Grenadier yet;
  3. Clevershade Awning. The most suitable for the Grenadier is the 270 degree 4.0m model. The one I own and use. Also available at Black Sheep Innovations Australia here;
  4. BOSS Aluminum 270 Awning;
  5. DESTINATION4WD D180 and D270 awnings;
  6. BOAB Offroad Awnings. They also have an awning organiser here;
  7. Custom Steering Solutions 180 and 270 degree awnings here;
  8. 30 Second Wing Awning here;
  9. Darche Awning, recommendation here; and
  10. The Bush Company Awning, see it on a Grenadier here.
Darche is another popular choice and they have a US Dealer as well. I looked on their website:

Thank you so much, @TheDocAUS! This is super helpful... and a great resource for comparing. The link you sent with the Bush Company installed on a Grenadier is especially appreciated, as it confirms my thinking that the left side is the right side... :)

As for the Clevershade, it's certainly tempting, but at $2,400.00US (not including shipping), it lands about $1,000.00 more than the two I've been focusing on... and I really do want to go with the Leitner HD bars, which @CrazyOldMan researched and determined were incompatible.
