Any recommendations on a 270 degree awning? I like the look of the Bush Company one but its mighty expensive, double the price of some others. Has anyone used one? any other recommendations?

I’m afraid the good ones are expensive. I’ve had a good look at the Bush Company awning and the frame is well made and very strong also I had an ostrich wing awning again very strong and well made. It is free standing but you can add support poles for stormy condition. In the free standing position I could do pull ups on the frame without any damage or distortion of the frame. Cheaper models such as the Rhino Rack one that Ineos are selling are very light weight and the hinge point does not look robust.
Im going for an ostrich wing awning again on my Grenadier.

Agree. I have looked into these a lot and the Ostrich is by far the best.
It also allows for lights to slide into the track.
Have had one fitted for 6 or 7 years without a single issue and in very high winds.
Good side walls available as well.
Will be going for the same again.

Free standing takes about 1 minute to set up
Poles & ropes takes 10-15 minutes. No doubt someone will say they can do it in 7.675 minutes
I have heard people say they don't use their awning much because it takes too long to set up.

You need to decide if you want free standing or are happy with poles & ropes.
No point comparing the two as the prices and weights are hugely different.

I’ve also had an Eezi-Awn bat wing 270 awning. Didn’t last the first camping trip and buckled the frame in a wind gust. Supposed to be free standing but with poles and guy ropes for windy conditions. No comparison to the frame strength of the Ostrich wing awning.

Just watched a video on the ostrich and it looks good. I like how the support poles are attached to the outriggers, it looks pretty simple to use..

You also need to be aware of the weight of the awning
The Rhino rack is 60kg and the 28kg
That only leaves you 60kg of load left assuming Rhino isn't going to de-rate their rack for off road use.

Inhave the same Rhino ine that INEOS are offering. There are others on the market that claim not to need poles are are probably somewhat more robustly built, but the Rhino one is easy to use, the poles are built in and they drop down easily. Is the the best on the market? Maybe not, is it good, yes definitely.

I hope that an aftermarket company comes up with a solution for a side mount system that uses the grab rails (or their fixing points) and gutter that could be used for an awning. The height and weight saving would be excellent! The convenience of a vehicle mounted awning without the issues associated with a roof rack or rails. I camp out of a little no.5 trailer, and the only thing on the full length pioneer rack on my defender is an awning 🫣.

My mate has the Rhino Batwing on a Prado - it is a good unit, pretty solid, easy enough to set up, side walls function well and does alright on winds to about 25kms from what I've seen. The accessories are all well thought out. Not sure on overall longevity of the unit (wear and tear). At $1000 base price + accessories = it will add up fast to get a full set up.

Have a look at Tough Touring .com.au and there are several bespoke suppliers that link through there. I want to see how the aftermarket accessories go before rolling out $2K for a kit.

Look for it on special, I think I got mine for about $750 on special and haven’t bought any accessories for it. Can just tie a cheap tarp to one side if you want a bit of a sidewall

I don't plan on using mine I just want to have it on the roof so I look cool.
So it has to be the largest and most expensive.

The Bush Company one looks similar the HardKorr free standing awning , which is cheaper.

Bushwakka also looks similar, and they have a few options, with a large double sided setup.

Ive got the Rhino batwing, which is good. Can get very windy here in WA on exposed beaches and it's pretty solid when tethered with sand pegs. Sets up in a few minutes - can do this on my own if req'd, but easier with an assistant.

I've also got orange maxtraxx and a hi-lift jack on the roof to look cool. I don't know how to use them, but helps me blend in when in craft brewery car parks
