I’m about to install Agile Offroad’s full skid plates. The transfer case plate gets installed to the crossbeam on a couple of existing threads and a couple of bolts that bolt into flag nuts (nuts on the end of a metal rod to position them inside). Once you’ve got it all bolted in you break off the tab to the flag nut leaving the rod inside. The plates are really heavy and attachment is very solid, so no complaints for sure. My question for others that have them, does the rod rattle inside the crossbeam? Seems like it would have to. If so, has anyone done anything to address it, like silicone inside the hole the flag nut gets inserted?

Second question, has anyone done an oil change with these plates? I assume the engine plate has to be removed, but I’m hoping I’ll never have to remove the transfer case plate. Since you break off the tabs to the flag nut, bolting it back on might be a challenge. Might be another reason to silicon inside to keep the nut in position in case you have to unbolt it.

Good question…I’m at that point installing them too. It seems like if you ever had to unbolt the engine plate that the flag nuts would be lost forever in that crossmember.

Sounds like a great question for Agile. I went to the site, because I this was high on my list for mods, and flag nuts are low on my list of things I understand.

Instructions for install:

Could you just keep the ‘flag’ part and use a new nut? But then you’d have a nut loose, literally. Can you use the flag to re-engage the nut to extract it?

Why are there holes, but they aren’t threaded? Would it be easier for a shop to just weld a nut in?

I was thinking of getting these and installing them myself- but the instructions mention two people? Is this a non-lift, one person job, or am I just going to end up cursing a lot and pissing off the wife to have to lay on the garage floor with me.

Here’s what John from Agile said:

Service can be an issue after.
Options
Don’t break the pole off
Tack weld the nut in place (what I have done)
Get another flag nut from us

So I’m leaning towards pro-install and having them tack a nut in place.

Is the engine plate the only one with the flag nuts?

Yeah, I installed everything else yesterday…only those two flag nuts for the engine skid.

I’d save your money…everything else is easy to install if you have a friend

To be clear, these are for the transfer case plate. The engine plate bolts to the transfer plate and is easy to remove and reinstall (so oil changes shouldn't be bad). I installed it today. It was easy to install (but a third arm would be handy). I think the best option would be to install a rivnut if you can't weld the nut in place. I hate the idea of just using another flag nut and letting the old one just rattle around inside the crossmember.

One other thought, I might silicone the rod in place and use needle nose lock plyers to grab it and position the nut if needed in the future.
