Additional VED for vehicles over £40,000 cost

My Grenadier went onto the road in late April 2023 and I have enjoyed 25,000 happy miles.

Today the DVLA issued me with a new V5 with an additional note added under the Special notes section saying: This vehicle is subject to additional taste of VED until 31/03/2029 as the original list price of the vehicle exceeded £40,000.

I asked ChatGpt for more info and this is the answer:

Yep, I paid £570 when I renewed in November. Fieldmaster diesel. I think the DVLA made a mistake ( or they were registered wrong) of those Fieldmasters that only paid £180 renewal, I suspect they'll correct that error for the 3rd renewal. I doubt they can back recover the underpayments though.

That is $720 USD. I can assure you the People’s Republic of California is even worse.

They get you one way or the other. In SC, I paid just over $1k for vehicle “property tax” for my ‘23 Defender alone. It goes down every year based on their depreciation schedule. If I don’t pay it, no registration sticker.

That £40k UK tax was introduced in 2021, under the auspices of that great political leader (Johnson).
I've posted before, but it is much higher in some countries, topping out at £160k first registration fee.

Yes it is. I’ll look at what my first year fee was and update you. Mind you that it doesn’t include the 10.5% sales tax or the outrageous income tax on the money used to pay for it in the first place. Don’t get me started because this forum is not the place for that.

Some UK members on this forum have been undercharged from what I can gather and it has been discussed before. Station wagons are costly to tax for the first six years. Thts why I went with a commercial vehicle with lower VED rate.

Yearly registration in Cali is more than $700?!
I just looked. First year registration to California DMV was $902. I suspect next year will be maybe $875. The great part about this is that the people voted to reduce our outrageous DMV fees and the California legislature went ahead and raised them again. This is why you see so many expensive cars in California that are registered to LLC's in Montana. When taxes become absurd than people find away around them. My bother-in-law has perhaps 50 cars and not one of them is registered in this state.

Trying registering a new Trialmaster in Boulder Colorado. The first year fee was $1800. That is not a typo. And this was In addition to a 9% sales tax on the purchase price.

That is a question for our local government officials. It is so egregious that many local owners set up an LLC in Montana which enables registering of the vehicle there in order to avoid the high Colorado sales tax and the registration fees. My Land Cruiser 200 still costs nearly $1000 annually and it is nearly 4 years old. But the cost does drop over time. My Jeep and Audi both of which are over a decade old cost $75 per year for registration.

Australia is different, our registration rates only ever go UP. So, the Gren I think in QLD is about $1000AUD/yr including CTP insurance but that figure only ever goes up.
