I stumbled into a order-reject Scottish White Trialmaster with Safari Windows, Checker Plates and a Hitch, raised air intake delete. (it's now on a garage shelf...) And my observations from less than a week of ownership:
  • can't see very well out the back, who cares, it's a cool truck.
  • door pillar blind spot takes an extra look over the shoulder, who cares, it's a cool truck.
  • seating position is a little high, can't see the stop lights if you're first in line... who cares, it's a cool truck.
  • short people got no way to even try to climb in, who cares, it's a cool truck.
  • bong bong bong speed alarm is a little annoying, who cares, it's a cool truck.
  • MPG kinda sucks, and I *care... but it's a cool truck. (*apparently not enough to dissuade the purchase)
  • steers like a truck, because it's a cool truck
  • has the turning radius of an aircraft carrier, who cares it’s a cool truck
  • way over priced for a truck, although about right for a luxury car...without much luxury. But it's cheap for an aircraft carrier, so, who cares it's a cool truck
  • totally impractical for an urban environment, who cares it's a cool truck. (I have plans for the great outdoors...but in the meantime I'll navigate potholes)
  • wife has a bit of a time getting in (short people got no reason), who cares, it's a cool truck.
  • wife loves it, who cares, it's a cool truck.
Wait. Wife loves it?!! YEAH! IT'S A COOL TRUCK!

Steering is exactly what it should be for what it is, in my opinion. (Based on having driven trucks and jeeps most of my life.) I can't speak to anything else as I don't have enough miles in the seat to have any real opinion, except the Safari Windows are pretty dang cool. I'm 5 hours from a dealer, and I truly hope I don't have as much "fun" as some new owners are having... but I knew what I was getting into thanks to this forum. And... it's a cool truck. But I kept the Subaru...

What did you do with your grenadier today? The first thing we did was take it to the kids house...and the kids kids went bananas:

"Woah, a ladder! Can we climb it?" Of course! So, within 3 hours of delivery and less than 20 miles driven I had footprints on the roof, memories made of a child peering through the safari windows from above looking down at me, a paint chip from some sort of other fun I missed, and frankly couldn't be happier about it all. Because life is short ... and it's a cool truck.
-------

There are a lot of great vendors out there who make perfect products that fit exactly... but for $19 you can blackout the Safari Windows https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0956YJYSX/?tag=globalgrena0b-20 and still have gas money. It's not a perfect fit. But it works.

----

Which brings me to this:
I want to thank the innovators, builders, thinkers, tinkerers, wrenchers, forum mods, and participating vendors here. 99.9% of these threads are enthusiastic, positive, and encouraging. Along with some legitimate concerns & frustrations that, as far as the internet goes... are pretty tame. Legitimate. Also well voiced. Is this rare among a group of people this large, this diverse, and this spread out over the world? Or is it that we don't get to experience enough of it to know it's more common than not? It might be odd to say, but this forum and the people here actually give me hope from an unexpected place. Hope from a truck? Apparently hope can come from a truck, and the people interested in it. I kinda wish you were all my neighbors… Even the feisty 0.1%. Especially the feisty 0.1%!

Thank you!! So you bought a reject? I like it..(y)

reminds me of my son who bought a "rescue dog" from the local pound... he thinks it's a cool dog even though it's got quirky psychological traits but he brings out the best in the dog... amazing
Yep... we are a diverse collection of motor mavens...
So: Welcome @AUDIOBUS to our usually happy supportive 24/7/365 world where as the earth rotates and one "shift" finishes the next takes over to offer advice, share experiences etc
And by the way: that is one cool truck you have!! May you enjoy many happy miles..

Hi audiobus, Congratulations on your New Grenadier. This has got to be one of my favorite posts, you nailed it. The Grenadier is all about creating memories and you are off to a good start. Miles of smiles to you and your family. DaBull

Sounds like you need to invest in some side steps and then it will be an accessible cool truck.
I have my 89 year old mother in law staying with us at the moment and without the side steps she wouldn't be able to get in or out.
She sits in the front passenger seat seat and loves how high up she is, the great view and the open airy feeling. Particularly the safari windows.

@DenisM Maybe "unclaimed" is a better way to put it. I guess someone didn't want their order. @DaBull thanks, I've specifically enjoyed your enthusiasm here. @DaveB, rock sliders with steps are on the list. This truck actually had the factory sliders on it, and if I'd seen that new step which attaches to the factory sliders, I'd have kept them! I love the black out you've got going on your rig -- I've got an appointment for next week to get some ceramic tint.

You are right-it is a cool truck but hey, buck up! I'm 75 years old and only 5'5" and have no trouble getting in and out.

HA! Great! I was speaking on behalf of my better half who loves it, despite the climb. :)

Right! Side steps are overrated and don't make cool trucks cooler!

Beautiful. Put a piggy back tuner on it, keep it around 60 mph or less and get back to me on the mpg. ✌️

Just hit 6k. Daily driver. Some trails, some muddy tacks, some slippery steep hills, a drive down a rocky lake beach. Mostly pavement. MPG is hovering around 14 - 16MPG. (calculator, not onboard computer) @INEOS OG do you have something to recommend? I've looked at some of the aftermarket tuners, and kept my eye on some threads here. Is there a thread somewhere with real in use numbers, "stock" mpg vs. "tuned" mpg? 93 octane maybe eeks out little better mpg, maybe. I run a tank of ethanol free now and then. All this in my less than scientific observations... but like others have noticed, keeping it around 1800 RPM / under 60mph seems to help.

I see 17-18 mpg at 56-60 mpg with 38 psi in the tires with the TDI Tuning piggyback tuner in economy mode.

I don't care about miles per gallon as it relates to fuel economy but I do as it t translates to range.

For those of you that are concerned about cost here is the breakdown between 13 miles per gallon and 18 miles per gallon driven 15k annually.

Miles driven per year15,000

Car A's EPA-est. MPG13

Car B's EPA-est. MPG18

Monthly Savings

Annual Savings
