I have fitted a Factor 55 Flat Splicer shackle mount to my winch rope. My reason for doing so was to provide a permanent fixture and also present a bigger radius for attaching a shackle. The factory winch rope comes with an excellent soft loop or eye splice and the User Manual recommends that a snatch ring be inserted into the eye of the winch rope to distribute the load across a bigger surface area or radius. Although this was an acceptable solution it relied on a loose piece of equipment and also seemed like a waste of snatch ring.
I was also uncomfortable leaving the soft loop hanging over the clutch lever when not in use as it was very exposed to the weather and likely to deteriate.
The flat splicer differs from other flat shackles in that it doesn't use a pin to attach the winch rope. Instead, the rope is threaded through a channel that has been machined into the shackle to make a loop and the rope is re-spliced. The pin versions only present a narrow or small radius for the winch rope and can also be removed reasonable easily by anyone with a set of circlip pliers and some determination. The flat splicer has a large radius for the winch rope.
The design of the Flat Splicer also shields the rope from UV light, unlike other Splicer designs.
The Flat Splicer sits snuggly against the fairlead and the gap behind the factory number plate holder is big enough to accommodate it.
The Factor 55 Flat Splicer can be used to connect to a solid metal shackle or a soft shackle.
