water in passenger footwell (RHD vehicle)

I’ve lost count the amount of times the HVAC on my vehicle has been looked at. Sometimes days at a time, but yet no permanent fix for this issue has been implemented. The HVAC has not been replaced (yet).

The attached photo is from a couple weeks back, after about 4.5 hours driving. Only when the humidity is high (Sydney) does this occur. No external water is on the ground of my parked vehicle, ever. The water under the floor mat is much more than what you see above in the photo. Funtimes

edit: yes I have carpet. It’s been fine, but acts like a sponge

Has anyone had the problem of water droplets entering the passenger footwell (RHD) fixed yet? I have reported the issue to my dealer three times and despite assurances that it has been fixed, water entry onto the floor and side wall carpets in the passenger footwell continues. I’m convinced it is related to the airconditioning not other causes.
Yes in the same position. First visit confirmed as safari window seals. Seals redone. Still droplets, went in before Christmas, checked drain hole, dealer confirmed it is definately running done the A pillar internally. Going back in end of January for 2 days to have another go at sorting. Mine only does it in very rain together with a strong wind.

I have had water enter the front left passenger footwell in a RHD vehicle.

It only enters with rain. The left front door seal and both safari seals have been repaired but the leak continues. The leak is definitely not related to the air conditioning. At the moment I have been driving with the drain plug out and the insulated floor covering removed. I usually just have the rubber floor mat. The water trickles in from under the left foot rest near the boot release lever. I suspect the leak is coming from somewhere else other than the air conditioner, the door or safari seals.

I’ve noticed it much worse on humid days too.

If you do not have safari windows, and you get water in the footwell, it is AC related. There is a fix for this via dealers and mine goes in FEB for repair (dash comes out, work gets done, dash goes back in). Hopefully with NO NEW CREAKS!

May I just add to this. If it leaks only when it rains hard, there is a possibility that the seal or possible debris blockage of the front cowel area. Water may overflow into the fresh air intake and down the cabin filter.

Mine is going in on 20 Jan. They haven’t specified what they will do I doubt their plan is to remove the dash. Would like to hear the outcome for you.

Hi OmaxG
Did you find a solution I am having the exact same issue, in heavy rain.

Hi OmaxG

For those of you having water enter the passenger footwell when driving in rain - it’s entering through the cabin air filter. If you crawl under the footwell and look up you’ll see the inlet and filter. You can also view the filter by taking off the access cover on the outside hood (closest to the windshield). What happens is the water gets sucked into the filter and drips straight down into the footwell. You can solve the issue by switching the air over to recirculate. I have the same problem and it took me a while to finally figure this out. Doesn’t leak when the car is sitting parked in the rain, only when driving. Switch over to recirculate when driving and you’ll be good. Supposedly a fix from the dealer, they tried once and said it was a cabin filter update but this didn’t fix the issue. When i have the time to take my car back I’ll see if the new update can fix it perfectly.

But for now switch over to recirculate and you’ll won’t have a problem!

Yes, I can reproduce the exact leak in about 20 seconds by pouring water over an area in the engine bay where two black cables pass from the engine bay to the passenger cabin (see photo).

The area is missing a grommet so it should be an easy fix.

@20250112_140916.jpgOmaxG ...
I looked around the firewall in mine (diesel) and only one cable passes through the middle of the three firewall penetrations, and it has a "hooded" grommet. As yet I've had no water ingress in the passenger footwell... 🤞

Is one of your cables in the middle hole an antenna coax.?

Yes, the dealer installed a UHF antenna on the bull bar six months after I purchased the vehicle and one of the cables is related to this antenna. I have had the vehicle for 12 months and I did not have any leak issues during the first 6 months.

Took my IG for $15k km service yesterday and I reported water droplets / leaking in the passenger footwell. Dealer checked and confirmed this is a known issue having replaced quite a few already - it’s a faulty heater box, and has been communicated to INEOS, awaiting confirmation to replace, which is apparently a very big job. Full dash removal, etc. Hope this is helpful.

I had the same issue with water between the two seals and it did freeze, couldn't open the door. I had to pour hot water over the top of the door and it ran down to the bottom melting the ice enough to break the door free. I will look at the seals to see how to correct when it gets a little warmer.

I have droplets in mine too from the same area which is caused from the AC pipes condensating. (I’ve seen the condensation on the pipes when I dismantle myself). I can assure you it’s not the heater box and the dealers and Ineos don't know the solution because it’s isolated to only some. Everytime I ring them, Ineos are looking into it but they did mention one time, they would open up where the heater box is located and insulate the pipes (hot and cold). I already have a new air box, new cabin filter (as per TSB) and it didn't make any difference and I would not bother.

Insulating the pipes doesn’t get to core reason why it happens in the first place and to only some. The solution I discovered my heater previously was luke warm and apparently you need to have the HVAC at the right dew point. The fix is bleeding the coolant both high and low pressure, top up coolant to max (cold engine) and check again after a few weeks and repeat the process to get rid of all the air in the HVAC. Once the heating is working properly, the pipes will not condensate and drip. Heat should appear on a cold engine within 5 minutes.

So far I have no dripping when I put the demister on but I need to wait for summer and a hot humid day to test thoroughly. So far so good.

In summary, the heater and air con needs to work perfectly to eliminate the condensation.

Let’s hope you are right, and the bleed procedure does work. I just had this done, along with the heater box out fix, but it is a long way until the heat and humidity of Summer.

Cheers for this, I’ll discuss with the dealer. Hopefully they can try this before they attempt to change out the heater box. It is summer here in Australia, with some very hot days, so might be futile.

I've not had water in the footwell but a lot gushes out when I open the passenger door. Looking under the door about a foot of the seal has come away from the metal. I assume the loose seal is not sitting properly when closed and is collecting water in the rain. Is there a particular double-sided tape I should use to try and stick the seal back in place? Thanks

Have a look at one of TSB, Loctite for rubber seals but not sure which number. Or take it back to the dealer and let them do it, I would.
