The OEM pre-cleaner, if optioned, is Donaldson part number H002432. This is a beast of a pre-cleaner and measures 11.3” in both diameter and height. The outlet tube has an ID of 4.56". It is so big as to look comical on the Grenadier and completely unacceptable, IMO.

If a smaller pre-cleaner is desired a good alternative is Sy-Klone. The intake tube needed to use a pre-cleaner is Ineos part number GRA-0B14-001380. This can be ordered from a dealer/agent and is an easy retrofit that replaces the top section of the RAI. Sy-Klone does not have a cleaner which matches the inlet diameter but they do have one with an ID of 5.0", model 9005, and an adapter that will match this to the intake tube, item 50R45. The cleaner measures 10.63” in diameter x 7.03” in height. This is much smaller than the Donaldson. The weight is 2.0 pounds. The weight of the Donaldson is unknown.

It is worth noting the OEM Donaldson cleaner has a higher specified flow rate than the Sy-Klone 9005. That said this model Sy-Klone is considered the appropriate spec for high displacement petrol engines in excess of 6.2 liters (diesel over 5.0 liters) and thus should provide sufficient air for the 3.0 liter BMW engine in the Grenadier. The model 9005 was also OEM spec on the original Humvee/Hummer military vehicle which had a 5.7L V8 petrol engine in the smallest configuration and up to a 6.5L V8 diesel.

A second alternative would be to use a different model from Donaldson. Model H002427 is the same style as the OEM spec, has a matching outlet ID of 4.56” and smaller dimensions of 9.39” x 9.53". However, this cleaner has a lower flow rate than both the OEM Donaldson and the Sy-Klone 9005. It would also be possible to use other cleaners from Donaldson in combination with an adapter to match the outlet and inlet tubes. Two models are listed below that have 5.0” ID outlets the same as the Sy-Klone. And finally Donaldson has old school clear bowl pre-cleaners that will fit but are not an optimal match to the field conditions in which a Grenadier is likely to operate. This style cleaner has a lower filter efficiency and the clear bowl must be emptied regularly.

Both Sy-Klone and Donaldson also have pre-cleaner models with a smaller 4.0" ID, but those have been left from this summary because adapting them to the 4.5" OD intake tube would require an extended adapter in combination with multiple hose clamps. This is not a configuration that would be acceptable to most owners. Further, these smaller cleaners have even lower flow rates which might drop below the level required by the B58 motor.

Thanks to sean303boards for post #2,393 in the thread titled “What did you do with your Grenadier today?” This post identifies the part numbers for the intake tube and the OEM Donaldson pre-cleaner via a photo of each. A few images for quick reference. The Sy-Klone is much more low profile and the adapter would not be visible once installed.

This is the look I’ll probably go for at some point but it’s not high on the mod list.

It's here! Donaldson size comparison:

I thought several times during the Sy-Klone pre-cleaner installation onto the Grenadier's RIA adapter that I needed to cut the rubber insert just to get it to fit. Silicone lubricant helps out a lot!

Almost there! I donned a pair of work gloves, laid the pre-cleaner dome on my stomach, and pulled the base of the adapter towards me. Warning: Don't attempt this if you have a hernia!

A lot of patience, elbow grease and silicone lubricant went a long way!

The Sy-Klone looks like a squished Mandalorian helmet to me.

Looks Great! So much better than the OEM Donaldson pre cleaner.

Besides the whirring, anything else you can share about the swap over? I am considering the same setup but would like to some real world feedback from folks who've already do it.

If your Grenadier doesn't attract attention, the giant mushroom will.

After watching a few videos on youtube, I think it would be easier to use a rubber tape gasket to fill in the gap between the 5 inch Sy-Klone pre-cleaner and the 4.5 inch Ineos RIA adapter. Besides having a vehicle that's unique and attracts attention, you'll get even more questions about the giant mushroom. :giggle:

Bonjour,

Good to hear it is as good as you say.

Did you spend anytime completing any further sealing of the raised air intake tubing before you used the Donaldson ? Or is it that good straight out of the box ?

Bonsoir

Great job, weel done. I have the same cleaner ordered with the car but haven't needed to use it yet. I am concerned that the weight of the head will be to much for the raised air intake pipe. It is very thin, and corrugations tend to destroy things. Did you travel much on corrugated roads?

Bonjour,

Back from a 9+ hour road trip reaching speeds of 85 mph. When I stopped for gas, I noticed that the RIA wasn't seated fully at the base. I pushed that section back in and heard a plastic click. When I got home, same thing. Base popped out. I checked the torx screws and they were tight. Has anyone else experienced the same whilst driving with a pre-cleaner attached?

There is a screw on the corner of the guttering right behind your filter clamp but lower, it is holding the moulded rubber in place, I would be trying for a bracket from there to your clamp maybe cutting a slot in the rubber and getting better purchase off the metal gutter, hopefully stopping backward and maybe a little lift movement and if that doesn't work just slow down :ROFLMAO:

The aerodynamics with the updraft from the windscreen and just the force pushing into the air at 85mph will certainly stress what normally wouldn't be. Largo's is just that little bit higher so the wind has a chance to release a little bit coming up off the windscreen and we will have to find out how it goes at that speed if he travels that quick, yours looks a little wider but the surface area would be much the same? How about weight?(y)
