As we now know, the usable length of winch rope is between 10-12m, and is 11mm diameter.

Looking at winch ropes, it is possible to get a 10mm winch rope with a min breaking strength of 10,950kg. This would give a WLL of just above the Grenadier GVM.

I wonder how much difference going from 11mm to 10mm would make to how much rope could be spooled on. If it is only @10%, then probably not worth it, but not sure how to go about working that out. But may be more if it is for example 10% per wrap for example.

I had the same thoughts. 10m is really not much, you need favourable conditions for the winch to be of any use. I have therefore cancelled the winch and will probably take one from LeTech.

I am set up to work with a 10-12m rope, but still wondering how much extra we could get with 10mm instead of 11.

Perhaps email someone at Red winches?

All being highly notional and making no allowance for preload reducing the diameter of the rope accordingly but I'm going to say that you will not get an extra layer on as you'd need to have 10 layers to make the 10mm at 1mm per layer. I think the Grenadier only has 3 or maybe 4 layers, certainly not 10.

However, it does have about 15 or 16 turns per layer, so that might get you 15mm or enough for 1 extra turn per layer.

A 15m rope with 45 turns gives an average turn of 33cm.

So 3 extra turns by 33cm ~ @ 1m extra length.

Here is the reply from Red Winches

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your email.
The decision to go with 11mm rope was made after real world testing of various rope diameters and rope grades.
While in theory 10mm and even 9mm rope would give sufficient strength the reality is ropes only perform at 60% of the published MBS due to the capstan affect when wound putting one strand of the rope under more strain than the rest of the strands.
Because of this we do not recommend using a smaller diameter rope on the Grenadier's 5.5t winch.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Did you “pair” the controller. The Red Winch manual is in the resource section of the forum. Page 13 has the information on how to pair the controller.
Also you need the PWR switch to be on as well as the 500A switch.
And have the winch lever in the vertical position.
There is a lot of information in other threads but I couldn’t find it.
