What could cause this noise?

I don’t think it is related to the brakes. The reason i say that is because this noise has been happening on and off since new. I always drive with the windows up so it was always faint in the cabin. One day i decided to roll down the windows and it sounded obnoxious and frankly embarrassing. I cannot believe iv’e been driving around like this lol. I have not done extensive testing so i am not sure what the cause could be. It starts randomly and stays for a bit, it has happened in the same sections of road twice (i am not sure if it gets triggered by a bump or just coincidence). It slightly increases in frequency when i hold the throttle above idle.

I would still pull the wheel and inspect all the pads, and make sure the caliper is retracting properly. keep in mind you're hearing that reflected off the tunnel wall next to you head. Drive by someone and make certain of the actual noise location.

100% something stuck in there. I had this. Removed the wheels and a snake skull and pebble popped out. Sound disappeared.

Did you figure out the issue? Mine is making the exact same noise.

I chatted with the OP and he said the dealer removed and reinstalled his brakes and the noise went away.

I don't think it's the dampener because the noise goes away when I hit the brakes.

The cables are definitely out of the way.

I suspect something is behind the rotor hitting the metal shield from time to time. I tried looking in there with a horoscope but the area is too small. I'll have to pull the tires and rotor and see if a rock or something falls out.

I don't think the issue is that back cover because the noise stops when I apply the brakes. I suspect either a brake pad is dragging or there's something stuck in the brake pad, although I'm not seeing any uneven wear on the rotor. Strangely, I only hear the noise on one stretch of road.

Mine was always triggered by a certain harsh bump on my morning commute

I removed the wheels and calipers to see if anything was stuck between the brake pads and the rotor. I blasted the area with air..lots of dust but I didn't see any debris. I reassembled everything and the sound returned.

I contacted the dealer who has heard of this issue but unclear as to what causes it. Will have more details soon...

I’m interested to see how many others have this noise. Mine has the same noise but only at lower speeds around 25-35mph. I’m picking it up from the dealer today (1-year, 12k mile service). I had them check for the noise but the couldn’t replicate it.

Exactly. Mine occurs under 35mph. And it's intermittent but stops when the brakes are applied.
