Toyo Open Country vs. Falken Wildpeak (255/80/17) on factory steelies

I'm not familiar with the Falkens, but really enjoyed the improvement of the Toyos on a light weight single-cab Toyota I recently owned... obviously an apples-to-oranges comparison, but I'm looking for an alternative to BFG A/Ts. I use this metric partially because they were a lot heavier than the stock 245/75/16s that came on the Tacoma.

FWIW, tirerack.com shows 109 4.5 point reviews for the Falkens, but 546 4.5 reviews on the Toyos... I don't believe everything I read on the internet, so the delta in reviews could be attributed to something as simple as a $50.00 "reward" that can skew the "reviews."

I'd love to hear Grenadier specific experiences. Thanks!

Thanks for this feedback... I take it that the Falken is the 'whole package?' Good in the wet; decent off-road; and reasonable on? Or are they overall equal, but the nod goes to the AT4W as the quieter of the two?

I am surprised just how much louder my BFG A/T KO3s are compared to the KO2s they replaced... with a negligible difference off-road. Those are fitted to a Defender daily (the Grenadier is in winter hibernation awaiting the end of salt season).

I run the Toyo Open Country and are very happy with them. I have had them on several vehicles including my Grenadier, a Ford F-250, and a Ford Raptor. I have not tried Falkens so I cannot give you any info there. The Toyos are good in the snow which is important for my climate. They also wear very well which I like. I think they are a good overall tire and highly recommended.

I ran through a couple sets of Falken AT3W on Ram + camper. Was an excellent wearing tire that was quite surefooted with PNW winters. Currently have the AT4W 255/80/17 on the Grenadier and would do it again unless I felt the need to run the 255/85 Baja Boss. You likely won't be disappointed with the Falken AT4W. Considering the weight metric it's worth mentioning that between AT3W and AT4W tires a lot of sizes gained weight. The Falkens have been a quiet running tire.

Previously have never owned any Toyos, well aside from RE888s, but now have the Toyo ATIII EV on a Rivian truck and has been a good tire in the slush and forest roads. Just not what I wanted on the Grenadier. Falken has a ride guarantee for 30 days up to a 1000mi...so you can give it a trial run. Think Toyo does the same.

I have no experience with Toyos but I'll share this... After about 800 km on BFG KO2 265/70R17, I switched to Falken AT4W 255/80R17. Factory steelies. Better in every way so far. Quieter highway, lighter steering/turning on pavement, cornering and braking on wet pavement feels less sketchy. On dirt, even without airing down they have been great on dry dusty rocky loose surface, dry rock, wet clay hard pack, snotty stuff. Aired down, ruts and potholes on hardpack seems fine, no better or worse than KO2. The only thing I can't attest to is snow performance with the Falkens yet. Good luck.

Thank you, all, very much for offering me your real world experiences. I think I'll give the Falkens a try for a change.

Now... do I blow the budget on a set of Owl Sixty's?
