This might be a dumb question so apologies in advance if that is the case. Is there any way to actually look the spare tire in place? Seems to me, looking at the locking spare tire cover, that it only locks the storage compartment but not the wheel. If I am correct, does anyone know if any mechanisms that protect the spare wheel from getting stolen?

Put a locking wheel nut on as same as you would do with main wheels.

I have a fifth OEM wheel lock securing the spare tire.

First thing I do when buying a car is to bin the locking wheel nuts.
They are a nuisance at best. £25 will buy any budding wheel thief a removal tool.
Strange things locking wheel nuts, a wheel thief will defeat them in seconds, yet tyre fitters and dealer garages struggle even with the appropriate locking wheel nut socket. 🤔

I obviously haven’t got a criminal mind as I couldn’t work out how to get a locking wheel nut off without the appropriate key 😂

Unless you have some Carlos Fandango super wide wheels that are something really special, most thieves couldn’t give a monkeys these days, when was the last time you heard of wheels actually fitted to a vehicle being stolen, it’s too much like hard work.

They would sooner steal your exhaust !!

The only one I might consider fitting a lock to is a spare, as it’s a slightly easier target.

You're clearly not parking in the right neighbourhoods. There's usually a clue with the pile of bricks on street corners

Well about five or six years ago my Mitsubishi L200 was in a garage on the south coast that was broken into. Many vehicles inc mine had windows smashed to get to the wheel nut key and many thousands of £s worth of wheels and tyres stolen.

Still fairly common here in the states, even as brazen as stealing them from multiple cars in a night from a dealer lot with cameras

i got to say that its been a long while since i heard anyone tell me that their wheels have been stolen.
Catalytic converters on the other hand seems to be a hot commodity.
I suppose the one good thing in our favour is that Grenadiers stud pattern is only the same as Mercedes Sprinter vans as far as I’m aware and not too many would know that. Plus not any Grenadier owners around that you could pass stolen goods onto🤔

If you are talking about the locking spare tyre storage cover then you'd have to break that to then access the spare wheel as it's screwed in to the wheel hanger. Not exactly thief proof but it would need a fair jimmying to get that off without unscrewing the bolts first.

The resolve to steal something is inversely proportional to the trouble required.

Which then begs the question- is a spare wheel 🛞 locking wheel nut really needed
