Anyone adding the spare tire to the bonnet like the original series?

No is the short answer. I like the uninterrupted view over the bonnet.

Remember the bonnet/hood is aluminum (or alloy) not steel.

They did it on the Land Rover to increase the understeer , so you wouldn't try to corner too fast.
That's my theory.
I leave mine in the dedicated spare wheel well in the rear tray.

Something best left to history and I'm sure wouldn't be legal in Australia now unless it was a factory option.

I had to do an historical vehicle inspection of a series 2a landy the other month and having to open the bonnet reminded me how damn heavy and awkward it was to do with the tyre on.

Cheers Steve

I'm pretty sure my SIII had the 'deluxe' bonnet, which meant it had a scooped recess for the spare to increase visibility over the tyre.

I always thought it was a liability, especially in a collision where it was guaranteed to break loose!

3x/week you do 5 sets of 10 reps and it becomes easy
And then you can get the spare wheel on and off the Grenadier!

I'm not certain the aluminum bonnet would appreciate a 45kg weight on it at all times, not to mention what a pain it would be to open.

Why not leave it in that perfect spot on the heavily reinforced rear door?

I’ve had a few landies with the spare on the bonnet and even though I’m pretty tall the spare really does block your view of the opposite front corner. Also makes a Defender undesteery as fk - even more so than usual!

The spare wheel on the bonnet used to be great for storing odds and sods like spanners and pliers when you were working in a field but I used to hate putting my head under the bonnet to check oil, water or anything else with the weight of the wheel bending the bonnet strut like a bow - I used to feel like a frenchman in 1793 awaiting the guillotine.
