Pizza Cutters?

I put the stock KO2s on for the winter, but I HATE the "laces out" look.
Discount Tire wanted $160 to flip them over to black wall out.
So, I used a sharpie and colored the white letters black.

It’s time for new tires. Keeping suspension stock. So it’s between these two sizes, 255/80 17 vs 285/70 17, which would you pick and why? Im stuck in my decision making here on this tire purchase…
I’m more backroads vs Offroad. Snow and dirt roads more than rock climbing.

Exact same situation and garage door height might be my ultimate decider. I've been looking at 275/70/17s as well

I sold off my stock KO2's and put on 255/80R17 Falken AT4/W and I am very happy.

Pros:
* on wet roads and snow I likely have better traction and braking than if I went wider
* quieter (maybe better fuel economy?)
* bonus: steering effort & return-to-centre is noticeably better

Neutral:
* offroad, I did a long day of skills training with the tires, climbing dry dirt and rocks, and never once felt I "needed" anything wider
* you get the same clearance gain over stock (a little over half an inch) whether you go up to 255/80R17 or up to 285/70R17

Cons:
* I may be worse off in some muddy conditions, maybe (but I don't want a mud tread pattern, which is really what's needed)

Honestly, it's probably splitting hairs. Get what makes you smile and wear them out!

Awesome thanks!

After taking delivery yesterday, I made it a point to swap out to my tire style of preference ASAP...the mighty Pizza Cutter!

I went with Toyo Open Country AT3s in a 255/80-17...aesthetically I think they really suit the stock suspension and wheel well of the Grenadier perfectly. Im not saying this is what IA should have done from the factory, but Im glad the vehicle geometry was so easily accommodating of this size tire (are you listening Toyota )

Sorry for the massive photo dump, but I figured for those interested there is not such a thing as too many angles...
Great info

Unless you're in very deep snow and need the flotation then 255/80r17 ( or 255/85 hehheh) is the way to go. You'll cut right through to something solid. A lot less chance of hydroplaning at speed in heavy rain too. Tread pattern is probably the most important consideration though. Just my 2¢.

255/80 for the win.
Both are around 33” tall but the 255’s are generally lighter, have better rolling resistance, easier steering and better flotation when airing down.

If all variables are equal, tall skinnies track better and will be easier to drive on highway. If you're one those irritated by the constant corrections the geometry requires, this is where you likely don't want to get fatter. If its pure offroad for consideration, or you're really set up well with the geometry, go for float. Tire selection only got difficult after the advent of social media, when people started making videos of tire contact patches on perfectly flat concrete.... you know, the one condition you would rather have a 911 than a 4x4, so you want to use that as your standard for offroad tire efficacy.
