Housekeeping in the boot

I've been assembling a collection of tools and equipment for the unforseen, either with the Trialmaster or fellow travelers along the 1500 or so miles from where I live in the North to my village in Baja Sur.

The kit contains small tool rolls of SAE and metric wrenches. A large tool roll that contains a metric wrench to 22mm. The large gear bag contains a 30' 7/8" kenetic rope, 2" recovery point and two 7/8" 316 stainless shackles.

Not seen are a 200 piece Ctaftsman mechanics tool set, and a small box of hand tools. hard to see are two one quart canteens. The bags and tool rolls are from an American made company called Atlas 46. the cooler is a 30 quart pelican and the storage box is a 1620 Pelican case, both are deserrt tan but it is likeky Pelican outsources cooler construction, hence the differences in the two. Close enough.

Not sure if you’ve seen it but sounds like you’d be a prime candidate for either the Expedition HQ storage solution or the Buzz system if you want to keep going down this rabbit hole...

It sounds like you have a lot of "kit" on board, just like me. The guys over at Inhabit Design Works make this drawer insert for their vans (the price is high because it includes all of the items). I'm working with them now to do a custom one for all my stuff that I keep in my Buzz system. If you wanted to do something similar for your items you either; give them budget to buy items, mail them the products you want in the insert, or get them very good dimensions of the things you want stowed, and they will custom make you one. So, instead of plates and knives it could be a 5S style thing (like this) for your tools. The price for the custom inserts is a few hundred bucks- pretty fair for what they do and what you get IMO.

I’ll attach a couple pics of my Buzz system below. The inserts are still a few weeks out.

Anyway, I'm worried I'm hijacking your thread and/or setting you down a serious rabbit hole, so I'll leave it here for now

I need to fit large items in the back on a regular basis, so I cannot do any built-in cargo/drawer systems. Right now I have a large milk crate strapped to the airline rail on one side for minimal organization. This Winter I’ll probably design a removable system support a quick release fridge.

So depending on your needs you could do the low drawer system like this or the XHQ linked above. I believe Goose Gear and Front Runner now make low drawers too. I believe the Front Runner is the lowest cost option in market and the easiest to move in and out. That said the Buzz stuff is really well thought out and over engineered in the extreme- comes with tons of tie down points too!

Same. My kit will include a 1/2 roof rack but for me this is all I need.

Glad to see I'm not the only one rolling heavy in the back Just about all of my organization comes in the form of a multitude of Blue Ridge Overland Gear bags/pouches (not sponsored, but have used their products for many years).

My drawers are full length (~36" deep as I moved the seats forward) and, while not the most tidy set up, works for me so far...

Right side is fairly self explanatory, the left side's bags unpacks like this:

For quick access most of the recovery gear lives in the spare tire storage:

I also found it super convenient to move little stuff to elsewhere instead of the regular cargo area:

There are also a pair of 10"x10"x2" packing cubes to the left of the drawer system, as well as another pair of 12"x6" pouches in the left drawer that aren't being used currently.

All of this is with me all the time because you never know when you may need something For the same reason the Maxtrax and hi-lift are always on the vehicle as well

The load floor is a bit small compare to the LC, etc, but it is tall, so I’m thinking of making a single shallow drawer to negate the wasted space and size limitations inherent in the taller two drawers. My other thought was to weld up a C shaped frame the utilizes the Sid D ring mounts, and have a easily removable platform with swappable wolf style boxes under it.

Day Lodge makes this currently, I just got one and like it. They are also working on this which I have preordered on Kickstarter. Quality is very good with the one currently on sale.

So update on the Inhabit Design Works drawer inserts if anyone cares/is following. They just sent preliminary drawings for the bottom drawer insert for my Buzz storage system that I mentioned above. Rough plan is to have a set of plates, cups, cutlery, salt/pepper, a corkscrew for sanity, and a rather serious pour over coffee set up featuring an acaia scale, fellow vacuum sealed bean container, stag x pour over baskets and glasses, and a hand grinder from 1zpresso (fastest hand grinder out there by twice in case you’re in the market).

Yes very much so. I do think the full system is the way to go. Tons of storage space and we have fit a multiple large suitcases in it. The area where the cooler goes is my black hole/fits two large suitcases stacked on each other no problem and more suitcases fit on the shelf. Many “camp cube” organizers fit perfectly on the big and little shelves, I got a bunch from REI. When I go off roading I stick the cooler back in but in general there’s no feeling short of storage for everyday things like going to the grocery store/picking friends with luggage up from the train station/airport. I actually think you can hold a lot more with the system because it’s all organized. It’s also been entirely rattle free which was my big concern although I did have the shop that installed it apply dynamatt sound deadening wherever they could without it being visible. Really can not recommend it enough. The other one worth looking at IMO is the expedition HQ system linked in my first post, although that’s more camping specific but maintains a large amount of open boot space.

I'll likely do similar - wolf boxes are 1/4 a euro pallet, and fit our space really well. Most of the time my boot is for the dog.

I have the Inhabit drawer inserts in my Sprinter and I love them, so I know these will be awesome as well. You have a nice setup.

I’m really excited! I had them make a custom Matt for the large buzz shelf to help prevent things from sliding around and scratching the surface. Unfortunately, my life is a little upside down right now so I won’t have my car with me for a few more weeks and then I plan to ship it to John over at Agile to do the power upgrade. That said, I do have a pic of the drawer insert without the coffee gear installed (for shipping). I should get the insert delivered tomorrow and will put everything in and take some pics. I just don’t know when the insert will actually make its way into the car
