Speedo may be GPS linked? Just a guess
I don't think this is allowed, at least not as a single source.

No speed info in case of a GPS problem, dito in tunnels, avalanche-galleries, and sometimes in cities with skyscrapers and narrow roads.

Isn't the GPS in/on the Gren on your phone?

Also, I'm hoping to install a HUD and I believe they run off the OBD port.

Thats a good question, it could quite possibly be on the vehicle itself, but we now won't have to wait long to find out.

Positive. You can configure a lot of details & info display WITHIN many electronic instrument panels, but repositioning the whole readout is a no no. In Australia the vehicle had to meet Australian Design Regulations which would fix the panel in a certain location.
Isn't this just the former - reconfigure within?

The panel is fixed.

Both are possible: HUDs use or the speed of your cell phone (therefore GPS) or - if you have it - the speed of the OBD port indeed (usually through bluetooth connection).

But why do they need the phone at all? I understand that it’s needed for navigation, track lists and messages. But all pure driving data should come via OBD, shouldn’t they?

I prefer the speed indication of the GPS of my phone. This is almost 100% correct. The speed indicator of the car itself (through the OBD) has a fault margin of around 5%.

Because I like to drive as fast as possible within the allowed speed limit + fault margin of the police (when it's safe to do so of course).
In Belgium, on the motorways/highway speed is limited to 120 km/h. It is known (appears sometimes in the press) that Police also has some fault tolerance. On the motorways you get a fine when you drive 129 km/h or higher!
Therefore I drive 127 or 128 km/h (with cruise control)! :)
(I know also the fault margins for other speed limits).
