When I had the wheel alignment adjusted today I was informed that there wasn't much clearance before the bump stops contacted the surfaces that start compressing them. On inspection, it seemed there was only about 1.5cm of clearance.

But as the rubbers are so big I wondered whether they are meant to be contacted early and be more of a part of the suspension than is normally the case on other vehicles.

My five-seat Australian Trialmaster has a petrol engine, 17" BFGs on steelies, no winch but bullbar, side rails and sliders. No roof racks or towing kit.

The ride is very nice and progressive without any obvious bottoming on even large bumps.

What clearance would normally be expected?
