Watco makes a butcher block/cutting board “food safe” stain that is available in darker colors including a grey or ebony. Curious what that would look like on the GP board for those who don’t like the plain or lighter color perhaps?

I just installed the GP Factor table and let me just say the quality of their products is incredible. The table and folding mechanism is built like a Swiss watch and installation was a breeze with no issues… gotta love a well engineered product like this. I also took some extra time and stained the cutting board for a more subdued look.

I used a pre-stain conditioner and four coats of Varathane (Ebony) stain then simply sealed it with a wax paste. I wanted to preserve the natural finish of the bamboo and didn’t really want to mess around with polyurethanes. I won’t be preparing food directly on the cutting board as I’ll use a smaller plastic cutting board on top in order to keep the shelf looking nice. Here are some pictures for those interested in how it turned out.

The stain I used was just Varathane standard stuff. I won’t be putting food products in direct contact with the board as I use a separate smaller HDPE board for chopping, etc… I wanted to keep the GP board looking good and use it more as just a handy shelf for general prep and let the other cutting board take the abuse and keep it disinfected or throw it away once used up.

There are products from Watco (see image below) which are supposed to be food safe but what really is 100% these days as it seems like there are chemicals and risks with everything. The GP board is so nice I wanted to treat it a bit more like a piece of furniture hence the stain and wax to try and keep it hydrated as I live in a low humidity area.

Here are some pictures of the products I used and I believe you can get them at Home Depot or someplace similar. I used a combination of foam brush and lint free painters rags for application. Use a pre-conditioner first wait about 30 minutes or so then apply the stain. Once you have the stain to the color you like let it fully dry for about 24 hours then wipe it down with a clean rag and then you can apply the wax which was oddly therapeutic. Enjoy!

Thank you Sir! We will probably be using it for having food on it so I will probably go the Food Safe route. I have used Tung oil in the past and may go with that.

It is a sweet set up. I tried to explain to a customer about the quality of it and why it is expensive. You either can see it or you can't.
