Car Won’t Start

Hello all.
I’ve driven 69 miles, refuelled around 50 miles ago. Stopped at first job, restarted, drove 10 miles. Stopped at second job, car won’t restart.

Sounds like it’s trying to start but just won’t fire up.
Battery at 12.4v according to off-road stuff.

Any ideas? I’ve called Oxford to try and speak to someone but waiting for a call back.

1st issue in 18 months.

Car is 165 miles overdue it’s service due to Oxford’s schedule.

Ok so in 35k miles ive had this twice.

I worked out in my case it was a "halfhearted" turn of the key that muddled the ignintion, almost like giving it a half crank then letting go. after this it just turned over and turned over and didnt fire.

Switched it off, locked it, wait for the small sos light to go out (which means its as off as off can be), and then restart. started first time for me.

I’ve had this happen once. Luckily it happened at home and I was able to use my spare set of keys and car started fine. Concluded it was an immobiliser issue and somehow my main set of keys got out of synch or weren’t recognized by immobiliser. Main keys worked fine a few hours later, so suspect it takes a bit of time for electronics to reset.

Thanks everyone, I’ve clearly been lucky with 39,000 trouble free miles and this is the only time I’ve ever had an issue (not including electrical gremlins at the start). I’ll give it more time to go to sleep and try again if this happens again. Slight panic set in as I was stuck on a clients drive 😂🤦‍♂️

It is never good when your big, shiny vehicle plays up in front of a client!
One advantage of my '72 Morgan is people cut me some slack - it's old, it gets a pass. Getting the feeler gauges out to check the points was a bit of a low point, (it has electronic ignition now).

I had this once at about 6000 Km. After some tries without success I took my NOCO emergency starter power bank out and it finally started. 🤷‍♂️

It's a bad feeling that I can't trust my car that it will start with a battery at 12.4 Volts.

I wouldn't worry James, I can top that....

Mine did it in front of a client who'd just spent 15 minutes asking me about it, as he was a jeep wrangler owner looking to upgrade :ROFLMAO:

He never did get a Grenadier, but then again i heard his 2021 Jeep blew up just after he sold it so Karma?

I have not encountered this specific issue with my Grenadier yet but I typically turn the key to the on position and pause for a few seconds just to let all the electronics wake up first and voltage draw stabilize. Considering all the digital dashboards, ECUs, sensors, module software loading, etc… adding load at startup most modern vehicles have software which will cut power to the starter if insufficient voltage is detected.

In most instances jumping in and immediately turning the key to start shouldn’t be a problem on a full charged battery. I’ve just developed this habit from flying old aircraft where allowing electrical systems to stabilize before apply load can matter. Sure you feel like a bit of a numpty waiting those few extra seconds and it may be a completely unnecessary step but so far so good.

Come to think of it with the Grenadier’s various switch panels, turning off auto/start, disabling ADAS speed warnings, operating diff locks/ Off-Road switch, etc… it feels like flying an old aircraft anyway.

I had this happen in a pub carpark about 5000 miles in. Sounded awful and not like a normal starter motor turning. Locked it and left it to go to sleep. Then it started first time. Was on way home after dealer first recall/warranty type action.

I don’t believe this is a battery issue but rather linked to immobiliser. In my case, the car turned over repeatedly but never started. I goggled the problem and found the suggestion of an immobiliser issue somewhere on this forum. Never happened since.

I'm not having battery issues, I do hook up to a CTEK 7002 once a week. I watched a video yesterday on this awesome item.

Normally immobilisers shutdown power to the starter motor so it won’t turn over at all, I doubt that is the issue
Could be wrong and the Grenadier is different to every other vehicle

Thank you C-Mack. I was a bit sad when after the software update the 3 bongs disappeared as that was my “wait till start” timings, but I usually wait around 5 seconds from ignition on till key turn, so it wasn’t that. I think like Spjnr, it was probably a half-hearted start whilst I was thinking about next job/heading home that caused my issue
