What have you all ended up doing for canoe and kayak roof mounts? I have the Leitner HD load bars with standard T slots - Leitner also makes load stops so I’m thinking that’s the way to go with straps, but was interested to see what everyone else was doing. I’m specifically interested in canoes - 35 lbs is easy to load compared to my Alu-Cab awning!

For our double kayak , I've installed a rear roller , and made my own retainers from shelf brackets, padded with plastic pipe.

Only photo I have at the moment. To the far right you can see a 17ft canoe on my Gren, strapped to the factory Rhino rack.

Do you have brackets or load stops or something like that on the Rhino bars? Any concern about fore/aft slipping? Here are the Leitner load stops

No load brackets, but I do use load brackets with rubber pads on Yakima/Thule crossbars. On the Gren the canoe is secure side-to-side by the straps passing between longitudinal rack supports. If the trip is long or bumpy terrain I put rubber pads at the canoe/rack contact points and also attach bow/stern lines.

Where do you attach the bow / stern lines, or do you run it under and through? The Leitner bars come with a rubber gasket on top of the bars.

Rear to the hitch, front to the recovery points (bridle). I typically have to adjust the canoe position so the front lines do not contact to hood/bonnet.

I have used strap anchors with other cars. You clamp them under the hood and tie your bow lines to it. Never used it on the grenadier but i cant see why they should not work here too.
Yeah I was wondering about that - under the hood vs recovery points - or if you guys had seen other clever options. Obviously I want to avoid strap rubbing - but a trailer seems like a total waste and PITA for a canoe less than 40 lbs - even though the Grenadier is pretty tall. It seems doable.

For those in the US who are interested - Canoecopia (“the world’s largest paddlesports expo”) is in Madison in about 3 weeks.

You have no roller in the back. What's your technique to get them up there.
It’s only 16.5 kg- and the Leitner bars stick up 5 cm and are 25 cm from the back of the roofline. There’s a rubber gasket on top of the Leitner bars. I THINK with a tandem canoe I should be able to push it forward without rollers - but not positive. I think that I can just push it far enough forward to hit the tipping point / center of mass - and then step up on the bumper to push it all the way forward. I know people with Sprinter vans use those tipping rails with sliders, but I don’t think that would be necessary on the Grenadier. I’m not sure - just thinking about it and wondering if people have experience with it before I fork over $8k on a canoe. I just REALLY would like to avoid a trailer.

A very small electric winch on the front of the rack connected to the ext roof outlets would be very helpful. I just could not find one.
lol.. 30 years ago my father put a small winch on the front of a van roof rack, and tugged his small pontoon fishing boat up a couple sections of pipe. worked like a charm.
