Looking for ideas, tips, discoveries regarding 2-way radio installations.

My goal is to install an Yaesu FTM-500. Right now leaning towards: hood lip antenna mount, radio body under the rear seats, control head ... still searching... overhead panel?

Hi,

Try to show you how I did the installation of my 2 bands radio.

I put the antenna fixed to the ladder. I still can climb to the roof using the ladder.

Antenna cable goes into the car by the gap between the small dolor and the body in the hinges side. There is enough room so the cable IS not squeezed by the door. Then into the car and below the "carpet" in the boot all the way to under the codriver seat.

Power is taken from the wire in the right pannel in the codriver seat. Pn and off switch in the roof panel internal 1.

The main unit is under the seat and using a cable the head unit of the radio is placed on the dash using special velcros. I have also a little speaker on the front dash behind the main screen also fixed with velcro.

Hi Aaron, I have a FTM 400 and an IC7000 HF set installed in my 2 seater. The pictures and a bit more info are on the thread Radio installation as @TheDocAUS said above - feel free to ask any questions if you want. 73 Tom

Just be careful with the head unit for the radio, airbag deployment will see that being a missile for the lower half of whoever is co-pilot.

Planning on an Anytone D578 (70cm/222MHz/2M) as it has a Bluetooth mic/control head. May use the mic cable, have to see… RF deck to be mounted under rear seats. Motorola XTL5000 (70cm P25) RF deck will also go under rear seats with control head to be mounted…. Hmmm….🤔

It's more the corner of the screen as the side airbag rolls down out of the A pillar and could potentially send it towards the driver's torso/leg

Very nice install! Has anyone seen a successful install of a UHF/VHF radio head unit on the roof switch panel? Owl Outdoors has posted some videos of their IG and it looks like they might have done something similar in the background but not official posts on it.

Wondering if you can show the backside of the faceplate and how it mounted… looks great!

Where do you have the radio?
Here are some pics of the mount. I went for a Ram Mount solution. The wire you can see i only needed to cut a small piece of the silver trim. The antenna mount is on the rear passenger's side.

For the radio, I put it directly under the passenger seat. I have carpet because I personally like that feel in my cars. So with the radio I used 3M velcro tape to the carpet. The radio is solid in place and does not move.

I used Messi and Paoloni Ultraflex 7 as it has excellent loss characteristics and great flexibility for a mobile install.

Thank you! And IIRC, you ran yours out the top where the factory overhead connections come out correct? I’m about to install a Leitner rack, and am trying to figure the wires I need to run while I’m taking apart the brackets in that area

Folding Antenna

Not amateur “ham” radio, but the new folding mount from Midland allows me to rotate a 70 cm GMRS “Canyon Edge” antenna out of the way from its position atop the OEM rear ladder.
