Wind Buffeting and Cabin Pressure Vents Rattle.

With my windows down while driving, starting at around 35mph my cabin pressure vent flaps go crazy. Has anyone else's done this? I have had mine at the dealer already but was not fixed. The slapping/rattle generated drives me nuts. It is not a subtle sound!!! I have already broken my body panels down for access. Removed the flaps themselves to prove they are the root cause.

If someone already has engineered a fix please share here. I already have 2 possible solutions from what I have reviewed so far. My materials won't arrive till this weekend. If 1 of my 2 ideas work or if both are required for a resolution I will share here next week.

BTW I still love my Gren. So far this has been the only issue I have had. Fingers crossed;)

No not at all... don't they have a tensioner in them?

@trobex thanks for confirming with yours. There are no tensioners. Pretty standard design. I am making my own flaps right now. Silicon sheets came in a day early. Stock are 1mm thick. The sheet I have is 1.3mm and roughy 33% heavier. I have 9 more to make wish me luck lol. Pic provided is with the flaps removed.

First time I heard that noise I immediately pulled off the road, got in the cargo area and had my wife drive me around to figure out where the noise was coming from. I determined that it happened when the passenger window(s) where the only ones open and at a certain speed. I assumed either mine is the only one that does that or people never open the passenger windows with the front windows closed.
If there is a simple fix I'd be more than grateful to you.

Hey Lars. Thanks for confirming I am not crazy. Just came back from a test drive. My custom silicon flaps helped but it is not a full solution. Plus they did not sit on the frame as nice as the factory ones. I may just remake the imperfect ones.

From my last few test drives I have determined that the solution is not going to be simple, sorry. I am 100% positive now that the vents and flaps are simply overwhelmed by the pressure. So the only way to fix it is to restrict the pressure it sees. I brought some masking tape and some foam to partially cover the interior panel vents as an experiment and that has been the biggest improvement so far, but it still does it. See attached pic as examples. Trouble is there are many vents.

I am heading out now to get some 1/2 inch breathable foam of different densities. Amazon is delivering some charcoal based filter sheets. I am basically going to turn the interior portion of the cabin pressure vent assembly into air filtration sort of deal, kinda dual function. I just need to compile the exact amount of restriction and the bad part pull the interior paneling off.

At the moment I do understand that adding the restriction will make the doors harder to close and cause more human ear drum pain. But myself personally I would rather have to crack a window before closing the last door or have to open more than 1 window at a time as a nuance then have have my car sound like it's rattling to pieces. I also have the safari glass option to pop up.

When I get the right combo together I will update.

Maybe go back to your dealer and open a case with Ineos? This is the first thread on this issue, and I personally have tested for buffeting with every opened/closed window configuration I could use. I have none.

No kids, no dog, and rarely if ever back seat passengers (thus why I moved the backseat into the N1/Commercial/Quartermaster position) (y)

I was going to say the same thing. My son loves to drive with the window down full when I don't care too, but usually had too because of the noise. Didn't know buffeting was a thing. Learned something new today!

Hey y'all. First I only joined this forum with the intent of positivity. I don't like negativity. With current trends I admit I am in the tech industry. I uploaded my issue to my Google drive in a video file. If you pm me I will send you the link of the defect I am experiencing. I have a deeeeeeeeeep respect for privacy in these current times. It is the same file I sent to my dealer service manager. If you don't have a recommendation towards a solution in this thread please do not post a reply. Today I have contacted Ineos directly. All my modifications parts ordered are in . I left a message with the other service manager from the only other dealer in my state. I asked if there is an updated version of the cabin pressure vents. If there are none the only solution will be from owners on this forum. It's possible someone on social media has an answer but I don't use that. Apologies for the rant. Tomorrow I will have more info. See attached if you think I am fake. Disassembly has begun.

I've just had my Grenadier in for a service and mentioned this, they couldn't reproduce the sound so when my rear light turns up I'll go back and show them, I have a video of the flaps moving when the fan is on and doors closing, but when I;'m traveling at 60ks an hours without the fan on they tap, once the fan is on they stop. This is not particularly ideal but it's a short term solution.

One solution is to weight each flap or to have the seat of the flap covered in foam

For sake of keeping everyone updated. My mods have fixed the rattle up to 60mph. Due to work and the area I reside in I cannot I verify at a higher speed until this weekend when I have more free time. I am too old for a speeding ticket. But I am super stoked that my assumptions were correct. I will consider my fix legitimized up to 75mph based on my needs and use case. Sometimes I am the most oblivious person I know and my wife can confirm lol. For hours I couldn't figure out why my passenger side was way worse then the drivers side, LHD. My passenger side is roughly 4 to 6 times louder then the driver side. I couldn't find a significant difference in the cabin pressure vents or cabin manufacturing from left to right side in the vent region or paneling. Then in a moment of clarity. I have a Trialmaster!!! The raised air intake design definitely causes more turbulence sending the flaps into a rattle ruckus. Should be this Saturday when I can test 75mph. If it is good I took pics of my mods and will upload. Thanks y'all.

Success for me today woohoo !!!!!!! I had no rattle sounds like my interior is breaking into piece's up to 75mph with all combos of windows down up partially open safari windows etc.

****ATTENTION****. There are 2 downsides. 1 of which I knew going in.
1. I knew buffeting would increase if I increase restriction to the pressure vents. It took may test drives and combos to get a balance. The buffeting is now like an old friends 2003 Audi A4 when you only roll down 1 rear window. But I prefer having to crack a second wind then the noise this vent was generating.
2. Once we got up to 83mph on the toll road the vent began to flap again but the sound is extremely different. It's subtle and not like before. And I don't drive at those speeds with windows down. Any thing over 65mph they are up or are just cracked open. So my target was 75mph just for margin.

If this sounds good enough for anyone else out there here is the list of my modifications. Pictures attached for parts and steps etc.

1. Make new custom flaps out of silicon mat. The one I got measured 1.3mm even though the add said 1.5mm. They way on average 2 more grams each. You will need to make 10 total in 5 different size. I used the factory flaps to trace the new ones. You will need an exacto knife and a leather hole punch. When installing on the vent frame face the shiny side facing outside of the Grenadier. You will know what I am saying when the mat arrives one side is shiny and kinda tacky and the others is matte. Take your time in reality you only need 10 but in total I ended up cutting out 18 because of my lack of cutting skills. The silicon comes shipped folder. Don't make flaps over the folded section they will not be flat enough for the frame.
2. I used 2 different thickness of the same type of foam I purchased at Joannes. A US retail store of fabric and upholstery if you are outside of the US. 1 inch and 1/2 inch thick.
3. Charcoal filter screen sheet. I only purchased because the foam I could find that was breathable was green. And you could see it through the interior panel slots.
4. You will need the left over silicon for the next step. So make your flaps first.
5. See the template pic attached. It is about 3/4 inch wider then the vent cavity. I ended up trimming it down but this should help not waste material. Trim down for your desired tension in the cavity.
5. The cavity filling order that worked for me. 1.25 inch wide strip to fill the gap between the C pillar of the rear and the vent frame. Make sure there is a lot of tension. This piece is because of how the vent frame is acting like a periscope. The air is bouncing of the back of the cab. Pushing and pulling on the flaps. You will see what I mean when you get the interior paneling off and how the mount bracketry is designed. Then the 1 inch thick foam of the template shape . Pay attention to the metal bracket holes on the sides. The foam needs to restrict these too. Al layer of left over silicon sheet. A layer of silicon sheet. A layer of 1/2 inch foam. And last the charcoal filter so you can't see the green.

Depending on your foam source you may not need this combo. I had to add the silicon sheet. Without it the flaps would till cause a racket. The other foams at the store seemed to restrictive and I cabin pressure vent still needs to operate. Your combo could be different based on the supply's you can source. I confirmed vent operation by closing the small tailgate door and watching the flaps open and close. I noticed that the flaps are no longer audible while opening and closing and doors:). That will be the first confirmation of you combo.

Apologies for the long post but it has been a long week of iteration. But I exceeded my target of 75 and hit 82mph. I have been in email contact with Ineos. They confirmed that there are no plans of a new design so it was time well spent. I really like my Grenadier. I asked if they are interested in my fix and they said yes. Will they come up with there own solution, who knows. While I had the paneling off I added left over dynamat from a previous project since I opted for no carpet. I can tell the difference. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer.
