I am looking for rigid storage boxes, with a height of about 7 inches (17.8 cm), to place in the rear loadspace so as to create a surface level with the rear seatbacks (when folded flat). Any suggestions?

Bump on this…
Further measurement indicates that 7 & 1/4 inches (184mm) would be the best height for storage boxes that would sit level (in the rear loadspace) with the the rear seat backs (when folded flat).

For the time being I am using shallower plastic boxes that, when nested together, provide the desired height to create a flat 6 foot (183cm) long sleeping platform.

That's what I would expect for the money.

You can spend a fortune for boxes.

🥳
I am not a big fan of storage boxes:
  1. their weight is useless
  2. you loose flexibility when packing
  3. they cost indeed a lot of money
I pack my car, and fill up the free spaces, sometimes with a box, but it can be a cardboard box. Usually I have one smaller suitcase with clothes and my computer in the car, but this is also a hassle to remove it and put it back.

But of course, I admit that storage boxes are practical.

Hi Jean,

you actually have a few boxes: The fridge, a black box on top of the fridge, a box behind the fridge and also the blue suitcase.

A lot of your other stuff seems to more or less not fit in a box. So your setup is, let's call it "creative" but also uses boxes. There's really no other solution - except that you'd be putting up with a terrible mess in your car.

I found my boxes that I'll be using in the future here:

They're pretty sturdy. And look at the prices: They're Euro boxes, which is a European standard and therefore faces competition. So there's no "outdoor and adventure" premium on it, it's all industry and transport standard. A 30x40 cm box with a height of 32 cm costs 10,80 Euros, and if you add a pair of robust and foldable handles and a lid it's still just 18 Euros.

This is all configurable and doesn't cost a crazy 60 to 80 euros per box. There is one difference, however: If you want to transport a box outside (e.g. on a roof rack), then a more robust and rainproof version is advisable. However, the Euro boxes with lids can also withstand rain if it falls vertically. In a storm or on a roof rack @ 120 kmh, however, I would consider more robust solutions.

In the car, however, the Euro things are perfect. And as I said, you can even leave them outside in 'not so heavy' rain. That's enough for me.

I have to admit that my storage is a mess, but an organised mess :)
Indeed the fridge is a box, my suitcase is a box, the black box above my fridge is my gas stove, etc.
But I agree that cheap boxes are also suitable.

This Deep Organizer model “PACKOUT” case has a height of 7 inches, just about perfect. Thanks ORSO.

A Zarges flat box? The height is 7.55 inches. No sure about whether the length will fit though.
