I expect there is just the one 'brain' with possible outlaying slave units taking care of a few specific tasks. Never heard of a vehicle having 30-40 ECU's. ECU will likely be under the bonnet or under the rear seat.

A modern car has usually in excess of 25 ECUs. My Fiat 124 spider has recently had 26 of them flashed

Just to get close... the software upgrade involved five ECU and some of them five aren't, in any case a 'central' unit.

As Eric said. See attached.
I stand corrected.

There was a rather brief period that auto manufacturers moved this direction, the idea was quickly found to be infeasible as more systems required computer control and control modules started to be located by where they best served to shorten the many associated wiring harnesses. Now many local modules communicate via the shared can bus.

Ow, so not like in my defender that there is one central unit?
Depends if you are talking old or New Defender, old Defenders may just have an engine one. New Defenders will have more like 80-100.

Most modern cars have an average of about 80, INEOS claims to half about half of most modern cars so I assume something like 30-40.

New Defender website braggs that they have 89 CPU's
And that's a good point too.. We're all using he term ECU. but ECU is Engine Control Unit. It's reasonable to want to know where the primary ECU is. Most of the other computers which people call ECU's do other functions like lights etc. Of course that's not to say that there aren't dependencies between them all.

ECU can stand for Engine Control Unit or Electronic Control Unit. Modern cars often have 80-150 electronic control units, but most of those are not engine control units.

Because of the confusion, it is my understanding that engine control units are usually referred to as Engine Control Modules (ECM).

In the Ineos it may well be labeled DME(Digital Motor Electrics) or DDE(Digital Diesel Electrics) due to the BMW drivetrain.

Given the panoply and plethora of software glitches , I'm wondering if mine has O.F.U.

The term harks back to med school days ; there was this guy (now uber respectable) who, shall we say, enjoyed a drink at parties.
The first time I met him the day after a very heavy night he was groaning and saying "Ohhh , I'm OFU"

I later asked what that meant and was told "One Fked unit"
