Gutters surviving 420kg?

Just talked to BSI again. They created a high lift version of their feet that might fit my setup as additional support and take it to 5 feet each side. A, B and C being the gutter mounted DOT200 and the red marks being the spot for the BSI high lift mounts connecting to the bars.

Must admit i'm pretty staggered by all this talk of 450/150kg loading capacity. Nearly half a ton, on the roof... really? Yes, static, but.

Each to their own.

For the sake of variety - an argument, from personal experience, against full length supports all the way down the inside of the gutters:

- leaves/ dirt/ moisture trapped behind the rails are almost impossible to see/remove/clean
- gutter condition is arduous to inspect (removal of rack)
- long-term/cycling loading of gutters mean damage, warping... and cracked paint is assured.

Rust.

The behemoth that is the IA-offered full length RR is likely seldom to be removed, and the supports look superbly configured to trap dirt and moisture long-term.

For myself, I intend to await a 3/4 version, will not store the RR long term on the car, and will load conventionally.

(Old Defender roof is aluminium and corrodes all the same, once paint cracks..)

Yes.

As I do not need the platform, I asked them to sell me the feet only. They seemed not prepared as they did not have a price on them, but seems they are happy to sell them separately.

Lucky enough to finallly get my rack and light bar yesterday… my thinking on going with the RR was, at this stage until mountings etc are proven, at least I have some comeback as it’s ‘their’ rack.

So for those considering -

- looks great
- finish is good
- rack and brackets (backbone) are absolutely solid
- backbones are braced at 90deg inside each upright
- light bar seems good, super bright and plenty of throw
- very tidy cabling and fixings
- no appreciable effect on roll in the corners (unloaded rack)


The flex in the gutter (without the rack) has been firmed up by the ‘locking’ effect of the rack brackets but if the rack or feet were badly aligned / twisted I could easily see the gutters would be pulled / deformed to the position of the rack. Rack is so solid it’s alignment will determine everything else!

Only issue from my perspective was alignment of the backbones along the length of the gutter. It was nigh on impossible to get all 4 brackets on each side lined up perfectly with equal gaps. There is either a very slight curve in the gutter or in the backbone.

Dan at Car Barn in Beamish was really helpful and took it back into the workshop to tweak it until I was happy - great service and the guys couldn’t have been more helpful.

There are a huge number of bolts and it’s not light so I can’t see this being a diy job unless you have lots of space, patience and three big mates…

I'm sceptical that the grab rail solution by BSI is within the design intent of the IG...
IIRC the grab rail was designed for a tie down, not as a weight bearing entity.
From the IA brochure descriptions, the roof load of 450kg static and 150kg dynamic was implied to be shared between the roof itself (on the roof strips) and the specialised gutter mount design where the weight is distributed .
I mention this on FB this afternoon and BSI said the gutters weren't strong enough. I said surely they are engineered to suit the load. He (Thomas Grutter from BSI) said no.

That is BSI's opinion. How do we know the grab handles are any stronger?

That wasn't mentioned, they use the roof bars (the ones on top) as support and the grab handles for torsional strength by the looks.

They do have a barrow to push that's for sure. Like the Clevershade, which I find lightweight for the over $2k. There are better more robust options that are also cheaper on the market
, albeit heavier.

Denis - that can't be right otherwise the load would have to be spread across/held by BOTH rubber strips and gutters to achieve static & dynamic weight limits if not then you would need to deduct the weight limit for either one each was NOT carrying any weight?
People need to have a good look at these "rubber strips" ~ they really won't take much weight and absolutely will fail if point loaded.

Link for patent above ~ I'd say the tie down is only one of several elements to the design intention.

Thanks for the pictures of the Rhino Rack. I am very curious what they report. Do you have Safari windows? I plan to cut my entire Rhinorack free in the front area for the safari windows and to move the cross bar. Thank you Barney. I’m still waiting for this.

Don’t think there is any way you could cut down the RR. The backbone runs the full length and the cross bars would be beyond the line of the safari windows.
I would go with Front Runner 3/4 length rack or the Black Sheep as an alternative if you have the Safaris…
