Hi there,

Like others no doubt, I am looking to save VED by buying a Utility and specing it up.

What are the downsides to this idea?

What is "VED" ?

PS: Ok, found it: Vehicle Excise Duty. A tax.

For the UK, the upside of a Utility spec is a big saving in VED over 5 years. The downside is being limited to commercial vehicle speed limits:-

                                       Built-up
                     areas mph (km/h)Single
carriageways
mph (km/h)Dual
carriageways
mph (km/h)Motorways
mph (km/h)
Goods vehicles
(not more than 7.5
tonnes maximum
laden weight)30 (48)          50 (80)           60 (96)          70 (112)
60 (96) if articulated or towing a trailer

Not that Australia has speed limitations based on these kind of commercial vehicles  but these kind of speeds apply to all motorists on these road types - not matter what kind of car you drive.  110kph is largely the fastest speed you can do on our roads.
The only exception I can think of is certain parts of Northern Territory which sometimes has an open speed limit on some section of road, or around a 130Kph limit - based on my last trip that way.

And you may find that (if....big if) you wanted to drive in cities (london, Bath etc) with the stupid clean air rules you might get charged the earth or just not allowed, as opposed to it being a "car" which may make things a bit easier.

Hi Jamie,

I can't give advice as Germany is different than England (which I very often regret).

But would you mind to change your (admittedly beautiful) avatar to something less distracting / intrusive?

I'd very much appreciate this. :-)

Dont you just love the "usually applies" totally British  view if it were Germany it would be un ambiguous .

"Usually applies" is because some powered vehicles are subject to lower limits, with stuff being limited to 5mph, 7mph, 15mph, 25mph and 27mph. In the total vehicle population, this does not represent many actual vehicles/drivers, but includes grass mowers, agricultural buggies, pedelecs, (electrically assisted bicycles), other agricultural plant and heavy plant, self propelled cranes and other weirdness!
