Sales and marketing boss Gary Pearson speaks exclusively to Car Dealer about brand’s plans

Some interesting snippets of info in there:

"Residual values for models after three years have been set between 62 and 68 per cent, and Pearson added he expects dealers to buy back as many as they can for their used forecourts."

"Demo cars are owned by the manufacturer and dealers are charged a monthly fee for them, but at the end of its time showing off the model to customers, they get the first option to sell it as a used model. Dealers will have a ‘couple’ of demonstration models each."

Solid dealer plan approach that can be expanded (initially target by region based upon existing reservations)

l can't honestly see the Grenadier only being worth "63-68% of list price" after three years.

l think you'll still be lucky to buy a used one one much under list price three years down the line, unless it's seen serious use/abuse.
Currently the waiting list is over 12 months, l can't see them catching up by then.
The new Defender has only recently been available to buy used at under list price, and that's been out for three years.

lt is possible that the Grenadier has a smaller more specialised market, but l can see them finding their way into cities like the G-Wagon and tarted up old Defenders

Where are you getting that figure from? I've seen posts from people placing orders relatively recently and been given indicative delivery timescales less than 6 months.

3 years is when the first batch all come off PCP, bound to have an impact on the market.

....bought by city dwellers because they look cool.
Nothing wrong with that IMO
But it will almost certainly bolster used values. After all it's half the price of a G-Wagon and arguably more desirable

I sincerely hope the city slickers, soccer mums and wags love them and all want them, that is only good news for us. More aftermarket bits and better residuals.

True enough regarding PCP agreements

I configured a Grenadier on the website last month and was advised 12 months to delivery when l asked the question.

l'll try again, maybe things have improved now production has started.

As you suggest future values of used Grenadiers will partly depend on availability of new cars but, also the electric & future lifestyle luxury variants.

I wonder if 5,000 Grenadiers a year for the UK is enough to satisfy demand over the next 3-5 years. Didn't the old Defender sell around 10,000 units a year in the UK?

Australia does not have any such sales restrictions - so maybe second hand Australian delivered Grenadiers could be privately imported to the UK?

Hydrogen and electric models probably available in 3 years so I’d be amazed if the diesel gets anywhere near 60%+ value then. Govs will only be tightening the screws even more to get them off the roads by then ….🤷‍♂️
Saying all that, I didn’t buy to sell in 3 years ….. this is a forever investment 😉

Interesting article re keeping dealers hungry. Even that’s got a retro vibe going on

The coming (deep?) recession is going to hurt sales for the next few years IMO. Prices might drop if dealers start to struggle. Interest rates could drop again as they try to flog a dead horse economy but the resulting surging inflation will quickly reverse that.

I totally agree - there are VERY few cars with retention values like that beyond things with prancing horses on them. Even a 2 year old Taycan Turbo S drops 50% of its value at 1.5 years - from sticker of $250K to ~$125ish - those examples being with about 4K miles on them.
