First thing is to put the transfer case into locked and low range. Then when stationary - and not on a high grip surface - press the rear difflock button. If that doesn't activate the locker you might have a problem.

I should also add that many of the US failures aren't catastrophic failures, but torn CV boots/damaged joints

It is only true for the driveshafts with one double cardan and one-single. The driveshafts with two true CV joints can be as misaligned as you want.
