Door May Fail to Latch and Open Unexpectedly

An unlatched door can open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V147000

Manufacturer Ineos Automotive Americas, LLC

Components STRUCTURE

Potential Number of Units Affected 7,022

Summary

Ineos Automotive Americas, LLC (Ineos) is recalling certain 2024 Grenadier vehicles. The door button mechanism may have been assembled without a sufficient application of grease, preventing the door from fully latching.
Remedy

Ineos will replace the door button assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 31, 2025 through May 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ineos customer service at 1-833-494-4748.
Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171) or go to nhtsa.gov.

Beginning in October 2023, INEOS became aware of a number of warranty claims for exterior door

buttons sticking when being opened from the outside. INEOS initiated a review along with its

supplier to attempt to better understand the issue. During the course of that review, the supplier

identified a process change at its facility that led to an inadequate amount of grease being applied

to some areas of the door button mechanism. Based on this information, an interim containment

action was initiated to rework vehicles remaining in INEOS’ facility. INEOS also requested its

supplier to review the door button kinematics to see how operation of the mechanism could be

improved for future model years. Following the rework of vehicles at its facility, INEOS issued a

technical service bulletin to dealers on February 15th, 2024 with instructions to re-grease the

component mechanism.

Between February 2024 and June 2024, INEOS received two reports of doors opening while driving

on U.S. cars. There have been no reports of the driver’s door opening while driving. INEOS

conducted further analysis of the issue, including an analysis of warnings to the driver and vehicle

occupants if one or more vehicle doors did not fully close. Based on that analysis, INEOS

reasonably believed that there was sufficient advanced warning to vehicle occupants if the door

was not fully closed and none of the warranty claims or VOQs to NHTSA at that time described that

the vehicle was not receiving in-vehicle warnings (visual and audible) in addition to the status of the

door being observable to the user. Based on the field data and analysis at the time, INEOS

reasonably believed the risk caused by sticking door buttons (including the risk of doors opening)

was low and continued with its effort to re-grease doors experiencing the condition. (continued

below)

(continued from above) As of late January 2025, INEOS became aware of a second VOQ to NHTSA

describing a door opening while the vehicle was in motion. INEOS responded to questions from

NHTSA about the VOQs and the issue more generally. On March 4th 2025, INEOS determined a

safety related defect exists in the subject vehicles and decided to conduct a recall to address the

defect. As of the end of February 2025, INEOS is aware of 4 VOQs potentially related to this issue.

There have been no reports of injury.

After verifying the VIN population and remedial component validation, INEOS decided to issue a

notice of defect to NHTSA on March 6th 2025 to replace door button mechanisms in all vehicles

manufactured before April 19th 2024

Background

INEOS has identified a safety related defect relating to door button mechanisms affecting

vehicles covered by this notice. In a proportion of affected vehicles, the door button

mechanism may have been assembled without a sufficient application of grease. This may

allow the exterior door buttons to remain in the depressed position and prevent the door from

fully latching.

If the door does not latch, it may open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of

injury to passengers inside the vehicle.

Vehicles Affected

Vehicles within dealer inventory within the following group:

 INEOS Grenadier Station Wagon MY24

 VIN range: SC6GM1CA0PF004877- SC6GM1CA5RF018955

Affected vehicles will be notified to dealers by way of VIN lists applicable to the relevant dealer.

Stop Delivery Notification

It is a violation of federal law for any new motor vehicle covered by this notification to be sold,

leased or delivered until the recall repair set out in this document has been performed. This

means that dealers may not legally deliver new motor vehicles to customers until they are

remedied and cannot use or sell as replacement parts, the components which are subject to

this recall. Substantial civil penalties may apply to violations of the federal law.

Please follow any special instructions that we provide to you for the return or disposition of

recalled parts and components.

Next Steps/Notes

Customers may continue to drive cars, and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be used,

provided that care is taken to:

 observe that door buttons have not stuck when pressed,

 ensure that all doors have been fully closed and latched,

 check on the vehicle head unit that there are no indications or warning signs that one

or more doors may not be fully closed;

 obey all audible and visual warnings if a door is not fully shut.

INEOS will separately provide detailed work instructions to all dealers as soon as possible.

INEOS will notify customers with affected vehicles of the recall by letter and other means.
