Which M/T tyre for the Grenadier? 285/70/17

Hi All,

I'm looking for a little advice if you'd be so kind. I've narrowed down the choice to the following (see below) but I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially if you've got a lot of experience with the tyres below. Honest pros and cons.

We're looking for:
  • A good all-rounder
  • All seasons ideally
  • One that is particularly focussed on off-road capabilities in a variety of terrains (Around 75% of overall use will be off-road)
  • Strong side walls (Min 3 ply)
  • Good longevity
I'm aware there's various A/T tyres out there but we feel we need something a little more aggressive for what we generally do. So a M/T tyre is what’s been decided.

With all that in mind, please feel free to add your thoughts on which one is the best and why. If I've missed one you strongly recommend, I'm keen to hear what and why. Thanks so much in advance! 🙏

  • General Grabber X3
  • Falken Wildpeak M/T
  • BF Goodrich KM3
  • Toyo Open Country M/T
  • Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ P3

Just to add extra confusion, what about R/T tires? Somewhere in between A/T and M/T

I have had Toyo Open Country on my last three trucks. They have excellent wear and tread life, they are quiet, they are well mannered and are a great all around A/T tire. But that’s just my opinion. Here’s a set on mine, 35X11.5/17

+1 on the RT style; I only have around 1,500 miles on them so far but no complaints on and offroad.

Just got BFG HD-Terrain in 285-75/17. Similar tread pattern to MT... I'd just google them for more info, a tire expert I am not. Pretty quiet (it's only a couple days since mounted, full disclosure), maybe a tad more than KO2's. On road feels better than KO2's. We shall see.

@Matt P for where you are going and the overland traveling you will be doing I think a MT is justified.
As to which one, well I think whichever one from a major brand is readily available in the next half a dozen countries you are about to venture into. No point buying something that you can’t get a replacement for if you destroy one. RT’s are likely to be difficult to get for you.
Good luck with the research.

And post more videos!!!!!! 😉😁

The Cooper Discoverer And Yokohama Geolander are a popular mid-price range M/T tyres, certainly in the UK. I don't think the Mickey Thompson are found much outside of North America.

Thanks for the latest input. M/Ts are for sure the way to go for us. Just have to take it easy on wet asphalt. Availability is definitely something to consider for our trip. (y) More videos coming soon.. we're doing a bit of a mission at the moment and so not much is getting done but we'll get back on it when things chill out a bit at the end of the month.

FYI the Falken Wildpeak MT in 33” is not actually 33” and is in fact 32.7 which is the same as the 285 70’S.. Often the imperial sizes are cheaper… Falken are good tyres BTW.

After plowing thru a bazillion tires, I’m more about rotating out tires at 60% tread than which tire tread is best. A new bfg will crush a 70% falken and visa versa. I doubt I’ll ever really be in developing remote world again, but if I was to feel spunky again when I retire, first and foremost for me is puncture resistance. Then keeping the treads fresh. It’s not that big of a money hit in the broad view, but you can also get a few bucks on Craigslist for 1/2 worn shoes.

Just a different perspective.

I have 17" steel and KO2 at the moment. I'm considering Agile Offroad Rims and bigger tires but don't want to lift - at the moment (I'm open to lift in subsequent modifications).

I have 17" steel and KO2 at the moment. I'm considering Agile Offroad Rims and bigger tires but don't want to lift - at the moment (I'm open to lift in subsequent modifications).
They are, no lift. Debating putting in the donuts I have or getting the 1.2” eibach lift springs on front.

Same here. Interested in upsizing tires to gain a bit of axle ground clearance but would rather not lift if I don’t need to.

Nice buzz sliders. I just installed a set a couple weeks ago and they are nice to have. Makes getting in so much easier.

Yeah, I don’t want the lift, do want to level the vehicle. Needs a little more than 1.2 up front to make it level, but should be close enough

I am keen for the 285/75/17 KO2 and my tyre people have told me that they are taller than the Australia Standards and won't fit them...I know, where there's a will there's a way...The government in this case is splitting hairs...12mm taller so halve that... I just love the look as much as the extra height:unsure:

I actually don’t know much about vehicle ‘level’ and why it isn’t level or what is the benefit of ‘leveling a vehicle’
If anyone can educate me. That would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
