Let me preface this post by saying I do not represent Mike Reed, Voyager Outdoors nor Bill Burke's 4-Wheeling America. I took a class from them last weekend but am neither an employee nor representative and the below is my own commentary and opinion, and does not represent those of the event organizer.
_________
I just completed Bill Burke's 4-Wheeling America's Trail Leader course in Grand Junction, CO and Mike Reed is one of his instructors. We had five Grenadiers: one stock, three with mild lifts and tires and Helga, Warner INEOS Grenadier's race truck. Over the four days, we took some pretty decent obstacles and the general consensus was that the stock Grenadier with no rock sliders had slightly more clearance due to the way the rock sliders bolted to the underside of the Grenadier. Not much, mind you, maybe like an inch. I'll be leading the two easiest trails (Geyser Pass and Shafer Trail) due to my having factory step bars and losing some clearance due to them, despite my lift and larger tires. I did all the obstacles the other Grenadiers in the class did, but we were extremely careful with my line and took it slow. Basically, with the steps (-), lift (+) and 33" tires (+), I have about the same clearance as a stock Grenadier. Hopefully Mike will chime in, but I know he said he wasn't going to have a day off between last week and the Rally, so he might not even log in to the forum to see this. He's a busy man!
Also, if you don't have them, feel free to get What Three Words and On-X Off-Road apps on your phones, as we will be using them during the event. (The Trail Leaders, at least are required to have them because the SAR and EMS systems there use W3W for geolocation and coordination in case of an emergency.)
Aside from reduced clearance caused by the rock sliders, was the principal limiting factor the low-point clearance under the fuel tank?Let me preface this post by saying I do not represent Mike Reed, Voyager Outdoors nor Bill Burke's 4-Wheeling America. Granted, I was driving more than spotting, but it seemed that the things that scraped the most were the sliders for those that had them / in my case, the steps, but only slightly. I did touch the area under the fuel tank once coming downhill over some rock. We were, and will be at the event, as careful as possible to minimize damaging the Grenadiers.Aside from reduced clearance caused by the rock sliders, was the principal limiting factor the low-point clearance under the fuel tank?
27-1/4 Road OHV, Rabbit Valley - Kokopelli Route, Third Flats Trail, Bangs Canyon Area. What trails did you run in Grand Junction? Most the stuff around here is a mixture of easy and just straight buggy lines. Hard to find some thing between.
Hi all, just to circle back to the June 12 origin story…Who all is serious about meeting up the Sunday before in Montrose area for the Rim Rocker at this point?
Won’t know til you try and you can always bail out if need be.Yeah, im good to go on all those fronts.
Rimrocker map linkPRE MOAB RALLY OVERLAND TRIP:
A proper adventure among friendly owners. We drive after breakfast, help each get through obstacles, camp when the sun gets low, cocktails and lies by campfire, repeat til Moab..
So are you and Mountain 4x4 coordinating/doing as a single group?Hi all, just to circle back to the June 12 origin story…
“PRE MOAB RALLY OVERLAND TRIP:
I see several people here share my interest in an actual Grenadier overlanding trip. The wife and I are going to the October Moab rally…”
“It would be everyone totally self supported, with some prior experience required, cooperative group mindset, and no limits on who shows up or what their tire size is. Nobody makes a buck, no entrance fee. Just a proper adventure among friendly owners. We drive after breakfast, help each get through obstacles, camp when the sun gets low, cocktails and lies by campfire, repeat til Moab.”
Nothing has really changed. Please join in if you can. Rimrocker from Montrose is the route and it shouldn’t be tough and we will do it in three (3) low key days. My wife and I will be North of Durango Friday night, Durango to Montrose Saturday, camping out in BLM dirt just past Rimrocker trailhead (as seen on ‘On X’ nav). We leave toward Moab Sunday after breakfast and then follow the original napkin style plan i.e. help each get through obstacles, camp when the sun gets low, cocktails and lies by campfire, repeat til Moab.
If you want to start with us in Durango just pm me and I’ll get you directions,
Looking forward to meeting new people.
No coordination yet. I had read he had family commitments at the Abq balloon fiesta. So are you and Mountain 4x4 coordinating/doing as a single group?
is this worth just starting a fresh thread with a roll call and get it organized? I am still interested in meeting up and can on Sunday, will drive over from Denver area either sunday very early, or saturday night and stay in Durango.
Sorry for the slow reply here on the forum. I was honored to attend this years I4WDTA "Test for Certification" or TCF this past week in SE New Mexico. We do have a few spots available at this time. Get out to Moab and be part of something big! All those Grenadiers in one place will turn a lot of heads..Thanks . I emailed then and heard nothing so figured they might check in here and answer back,
Just got home from TFC yesterday. What an amazing experience to train with the worlds best Off-Road Trainers. The trails are mapped and pre-running final lines will occur next week. + @Brandtnm, i will drive over on saturday also, 5.5 hr drive for me, so will arrive in the mid afternoon. I plan on leaving after an early breakfast with family. Will DM with cell phone number also so we can connect on saturday midday as we're all arriving to the montrose area?Sorry guys always so damn busy, so I keep neglecting. The biggest thing to understand is how many rigs for the early overlanding part and who will arrive first and identify and mark a camp area. I should be able to leave bright and early, say even 6am. But it will be a 7hr drive for me, so lets say 1:30 at best maybe a little later, and probably another hour to find a campsite. This will be the first time out of thousands of days and 40 years of wheeling staying in a motel on purpose for part of the trip, so I am doing something new as well! The Lodge was out of rooms but called me with one Monday, obviously they do not have many if you want one. Just thought i would try it, especially with the non stop closures in the Moab area. Its hard to know what is open. Been out of the Moab scene for awhile. And of course joining the rest of the gang.
We might have the only clean Grennies there! See you then, Bill. I'm arriving on the 10th. We're staying at the Expedition Lodge for 5 nights.(I am reading more about the adventure of GETTING to Moab than the Ocktoberfest event itself! I look forward to meeting everyone there on the 10th, Bill)
