What is the best way to get some cheap shade on the IG? I don’t have the room for a dedicated shade/roof system. I was thinking of using a tarp and attach it to the roof lip or the roof handles and then have legs extending from the L-track to hold it out for shade.

Is there anyone making something like this? I can 3D design and print parts to do this. CF-PA is pretty strong. Not so worried about rain, more about sun. Main concern is wind and loads not on the three parts. Which ones are the strongest? I was thinking about adding some ‘blow-out’ features to the tarp to reduce peak wind loads

Check out Force Protector Gear. It is exactly what you are asking for. The model is the Adapter Shade Panel. Plus there is a ton of ideas if you want to make your own, but the high tech fabric they use drops the temperatures in the heat and could save your life in the cold. Think high end space blanket.

I have three of the roof bars. They are RhinoRack "reconn" with a channel on each face. I attached a 2m length of 9mm sail track to the roofbars with right angled brackets.
Similarly, I've attached a 1.65m length of sail track to the rear roof bar.
Into each bar I slide a 2.5 x 3m tarp with a 7.5mm rope edge and secure it with either lightweight extendable tent 20240608_100053.jpgpoles or rig it to a nearby tree.
It's quick to erect, light to pack and the sail rail presents minimal wind resistance.20240608_100133.jpg

That is really cool. So you have it draped over the whole vehicle too? That is an interesting twist to keep the interior a bit cooler too…

Great idea! might cobble together a longer tarp and do just that 👍
I must say that Scottish White is excellent for reflecting heat😉

This is my simple cheap awning solution, using a standard 10'x8' tarp, tent poles, spreader bar and the shovel /pole holder on my rhino roof bars. Pics from my old discovery, but I'm running the same set-up on Henry.
Cheers

that is ingenious. I too have 3 Rhino bars. I will look into something similar. Did you sew a luff rope in or repurpose an old sail?

I have some awning canvas to which I intend to sew some "keder sail track tape" with a 7.5mm rope insert ... which suits the 9mm sail track. (I read somewhere that the 5mm -6.5mm keder tape is usually more common in the UK/Europe).
In the meantime I bought an "Econotarp" from Western Australia with the keder tape already sewn in. e.g.

6.5mm luff rope fits most jib tracks, 7mm or thereabts finished size. not always an exact science however.

Here's something similar I concocted on a Rangie P38 I had years ago. In this case, the tarp was attached with cheap carabiners to a length of "Dexion" slotted angle itself anchored to a roof basket The tarp becomes self supporting with extendable tent poles separated by a spreader pole. If it becomes too windy the poles are mounted vertically with ropes and pegs...

That's also a decent set up. I like the pole part. Much lighter than some of the purpose awnings and a damn sight cheaper. Though not talking down the awnings, just don't use mine enough.

Thanks, everyone for the insights and examples. Those are all kind of in the universe of what I was thinking of. Still trying to deal with a 7 foot garage door and what kind of modifications I can make. Plus what kind of modifications I’ll actually use. I definitely don’t like sitting in the sun and doing it at over 10,000 feet is even worse. Plus these give me a good idea as to what size of tarp is reasonable. Of course I’m always trying to make it too big.

I like this lightweight approach. I also face clearance issues for daily use. And something field-repairable and Macgyverable is appealing to me. So I've just recently found this world (new to me) of light/DIY "sail rail" awnings with tracks and kador beads on tarps that seem pretty clever.

A few examples or inspiration:

yep.... clearance is critical! 8mm unladen... HD spring upgrade out of the question 😉20240513_103754.jpg
