I have updated the list. one big surprise is MITS Alloy said no for making a flatbed/canopy for QM. This came from the Business Development Manager. The other surprise was RSI saying no too.

All Standard Dual Cabs Start at $16,500.00

Our Prices Include Fitment and Tub Disposal.
I have attached a few modelled images and our first Tray sitting in our showroom for a mine spec build we did.
Standard Features include:

  • Side boards with 316 S/S latches and hinges
  • Full 4mm Aluminium floor – smooth finish (no checker plate)
  • Rear UTB with colour matched deco
  • Rear trundle drawer with colour matched deco
  • LED auto lamps maxi lamps x 6
  • Under slung number plate bracket with number plate light
  • Reverse Camera bracket
  • 80l under tray water tank with gravity/fill lockable tap
  • 100x50mm headboard with mesh infill
  • 1 x 38mm fuel filler (note no high flow available)
  • Fully welded 1 piece mud guards with colour matched corner infill
  • Mud flaps with colour matched deco piece.
  • Full texture black powder coating
  • Relocation of Factory reverse sensors into rear clip
  • Coin profile rubber matting to rear tray – 10mm thick heavy-duty rubber
  • Fitment of Tray and removal and disposal of existing Tub or Tray

Standard Dual Cab Model external measurements are: 1750mm Long and 1820mm Wide

Standard Single Model external measurements: 2350mm Long and 1820mm Wide

Standard Extra Cab Model external measurements: 2100mm Long and 1820mm Wide

A number of 4x4 suppliers said no to the Grenadier in Australia, but came onboard later like KAON. Someone will step in if they do not, nature abhors a vaccum. It helps if suppliers keep getting inquiries from different people, that can trigger development.

I have been looking at building a tray for another ute using standard aluminium extrusions a modern adhesives from the transport sector. The assembly is very similar to ute flat pack trays but a little bit heavier and some nicer looking combing extrusions. The tray will be cheaper to make and repair than a fully custom welded aluminium tray. The cost of a fully welded aluminium tray is high because it is more labour intensive to prepare aluminium for good looking quality welds than it is for the same tray in steel.

I am surprised that RSI said no tbh.

However I am not sure how popular any IA product will be over in South Africa as that place really is Land Cruiser world and if not an LC then it’s a bukkie (pickup).

Think it will eventually earn a place in SA but it will definitely take time. The guys selling them are really keen and knowledgable in the Cape Town area for sure.

The exchange rate makes Grenadier’s very expensive in SA. That’s why the Mahindra “Coolie Cruiser’s “ are so popular especially with farmers. About 1/3 the price of a Grenadier and plenty have aluminium tray backs.

Looks like Alu Black has bought a QM and have fitted one of their tray/canopy set up on it. The rear end seems to be squatting. Might need a spring upgrade.

I was at Offfroad Systems this week and they spoke very highly of BK Canopies of Smeaton Grange (Sydney).

Turns out they made the ORS water tank I have installed.

I do not know if they have made an INEOS canopy yet, but their quality is excellent. As they do custom work, a canopy for the Grenadier can be done.

A family owned business.

Hey @DaveB, as a pom I'm not familiar with these Aussie tray conversions: They look awesome but why is the stainless steel headboard (looks like a bedstead!) in the video so much taller than the cab? is that for mounting spotties for when you head out shooting 'roos? 😋
To stop anything in the tray coming thru the back window and into the cabin. If we looked at the Australian Design Rules (ADR), we will probably find such a requirement.

Probably to make it harder for any item to go over the top rail onto the roof. The pictures also show the guard is wider than the cabin on each side.

This is a common design feature on other models as well like Toyotas 70 series.

MITS Alloy and other makers have the same design feature, so it maybe an ADR requirement. But the ADR rules are a maze.

No ADRs for head boardboards in Australia, trays can be made with none like a standard well body. The main reason is when a ladder rack is fitted at the rear of the tray a long load does not share the cab roof load or contact the cab with normal chassis movement. Heavily loaded utes just like trucks with rigid mounted bodies or heavy duty trays can have a fair amount of normal movement between the cab and tray.
In Australia the industry standard tray for a dual cab is around 1600 to 1850mm long and around 1750 to 1850 wide with around 300mm high drop sides with most being wider then the cab.

Thanks, I can stop trying navigate that maze.

Plenty of other tray makers have that feature, it is very common after looking at about 30-40 images of various ute trays and canopies.

EDIT: there are guides around load restraints. Guide here. Headboards is one of the means of direct restraint as this diagram shows. perhaps that plays a role.
