Hey if you can get the photo then by all means.

Next month we can have the max inclination, and keep going. My personal favorite and a throw down challenge to the staff at IA, how low can you go with the fuel tank and not run out. But that’s for the future ;)
I've been down to 22.142 gallons

Color coded a couple of the route with passes you need to go though to from Colorado Springs back to Durango, note for Lizard Head you still need to go over Monarch Pass just the road is little nicer in Winter storm then Hwy 550. I threw in a few of the one way road you can hit in the summer to much higher altitude badges of honor. Pike Peak is variable in the winter depending on snow coming into Colorado. Some could go ski A-Basin and take the prize which puts you over Loveland Pass 11,922 feet, most us drive though Eisenhower tunnel instead taking the pass.

One these are all the paved roads, I have list few more for Gravel and Shelf roads ; )

So you have idea of where these passes are relative to Durango and Colorado Springs. Hwy 550 from Ouray to Silverton is alway fun in the Winter. Came back over it to weeks ago on Bluebird day - this was view for Molas pass - you can see the Grenadier Mountains. View attachment 7847292

Home sweet home. DRGW. (Denver and Rio Grand Western historic narrow gauge railroad to the rest of the world) You're local so I won't insult you - but be ready to be stuck for days and nights just in case. I've camped in snow in Rico in Elk season.

Best laid plans...hahahaha I was in NM in May 2022 and everything was burning. At least you won't have to worry about that. Nice map and chart.

It’s a bust for me.I turned around at the gate; Pikes Peak Highway is presently under water above 10K.

I gotta win the lowest altitude because my altimeter says I’m below sea level most of the time here in Florida. Dealer says the alternator works on barometric pressure so it doesn’t function correctly in Florida. This makes no sense to me, can this be true?

yes. in general youre within the pressure deviation detected by a mild cold front. statistically, you're always at sea level.

On the bright, this will change in a few decades and you'll be below. The pressure reading will really spike when it turns into a uboat.

Altimeters need to be calibrated to adjust for the local air pressure which fluctuates based on atmospheric conditions. I would imagine the altimeter in the IG is set to standard of 29.92In/HG (inches of mercury)- so unless the local air pressure happens to be 29.92 in/HG the moment your glance at the cars altimeter there will be an error. Higher pressure will cause the altimeter to read low (what you are describing with the below sea level indications), and lower local pressure will cause it to error high. In order to get an accurate reading on a barometric altimeter you would have to know the current local altimeter setting and calibrate it accordingly like what has to be done in an aircraft. This is why pilots must get the local altimeter setting from ATC or via ATIS prior to departing, arriving, and airfield, or transiting different sectors of air space. This setting is set in the altimeter via a small knob and displayed in the kollsman window as depicted below.

1/10 of an inch of mercury accounts for about a +/- 100' error so on an extreme low or high pressure day (such as ahead of or after a storm passage) the error can be quite significant. Kind of silly to place a non adjustable barometric altimeter in a vehicle- should have maybe gone off a GPS signal to be more accurate.

11,940 ft today on way to Arapahoe Basin ski resort. Did just fine.
Only bummer is the wipers are definitely weak in snow (piles up and sticks to the wipers requiring numerous stops to clear)

coloradosnow : That's a very respectable altitude! I often wonder how people manage to breathe comfortably those altitudes let alone physically extert themselves in snow sports!!

FWIW: This is one competition that us inhabitants of the wide brown land Down-under can gracefully bypass! With an average elevation of just under 1000 ft this very old worn down continent, which once hosted a mighty inland sea has a ski village (Perisher Valley) at 5,700 feet elevation ASL. .... and that's the highest inhabited village. The peak of the highest "hill" Mt Kosciuszko is a mere 7,310 ft...

coloradosnow Nice you made it over Loveland Pass before the storm, that highest pass open right now in Colorado ( maybe not today) and North America which open.

It would be fun drive a Grenadier go over these two passes the highest paved roads in world.

- South America: Chivay-Arequipa / Peru 4,910 m / 16,110 ft
- Asia: Khunjerab Pass / Pakistan 4,730 m / 15,529 ft

Then for real challenge dirt/gravel road passes down in South America try some of lower passes, Soon we see Grenadier down there.

In a breakfast cafe in Kansas a couple of guys were telling road stories about driving big rigs over passes in blizzards. I was only sort of impressed until I realized the guy didn't say "Donner" he said "Brenner" and it was in an army 6x6. Brenner isn't high altitude but is was funny.

So I put in a little high altitude driving break in my new Grenadier. It was a great drive back from Red Noland in Colorado Springs back to Durango.

That's a very good correlation between the vehicle altimeter and the "official" posted altitude.... less than 0.5% variation ! Perhaps the instruments work better at high altitudes.. .🤔
