General question about tire dimensions

I have read about 35" tires and don't understand the numbers.

Here in Germany, we have e.g. 17" tires in the Grenadier configurator. Seems, that tire dimensions use different measures in the USA and in Germany.

Can somebody shed some light on this?

35" tires refers to the diameter of the tire from tread to tread, whereas the 17" is the wheel diameter. 

a 35/12.5/r17 translates to 35", and that tire would be on a 17 inch rim

You can type into google "convert ----" and it will do the conversion for you, either from metric to "inches" or "American" or whatever we call it, or you can convert in the other direction. You can also google "tire converter" and it will take you to a page that will look something like this (below) where I have entered two different metric tire sizes for conversion.

The American system is to refer to a tire by its height (i.e. diameter), then its width, then the wheel size. So "35 x 12.5 R17" is a tire that is 35 inches tall, by 12.5 inches wide, on a 17-inch wheel (wheel size directly impacts how much sidewall you have, when controlling for tire height). Having been raised with the American system, I find it much more intuitive than the metric system. What a shock ?

The top image is for the stock tires on the Grenadier - on 17-inch wheels (you will probably be able to order a Grenadier on 18-inch wheels as well). The second image is converting the metric equivalent of a "35-inch" tire (315/70/R17) to inches.

Side note, the "inches" sizing is often refered to as "flotation" sizing, and it popular for large truck sizes - based on legacy use cases of wanting to "float" over soft soils and such.

My choice will be the 18' K02, it seems to have the sweet spot on build and load range. Stiff but not hard like the 10 ply tires.
