Flagpole Knob - April 13-14

Throwing this out there for the Mid-Atlantic folks:

I'm heading to Flagpole Knob this weekend with a buddy of mine. Plan is to run the trails, probably including Union Springs, and camp Saturday night. Rallying in either NOVA (Costco in Leesburg) or Harrisonburg then heading to Switzer Lake for lunch at like 1/2pm Saturday (will know more definitive plans Friday). If anyone is interested, please reach out or post here--all welcome! We are currently looking at a few vehicles confirmed so far including me, a Tacoma, and possibly a Hilux Surf.

We had planned on hitting up Peter's Mill but it looks like it's still closed due to the fire situation. If that changes before Saturday we will plan accordingly.

Glad to see people getting out and using their vehicles! With no vehicle yet and being out of town, I'll be skipping this one but looking forward to something later on in the season.

Which route are you planning up Flagpole? (Union Springs or Dinkle Hollow)

I think we're taking Dunkle up, but we may also switch it up. I've never gone up Union Springs and would love to, but I know it's a very line-specific route for stock vehicles so would only go up if a buddy of mine who's handled it a bunch joins in his Bronco lol. That one tree obstacle is quite gnarly from what I've seen.

Union Springs is definitely more of an "experience" for a stock-ish vehicle, and definitely requires good lines. I'm not entirely sure I would do it without either a spotter you trust or sliders

Yeah, and I don't have sliders so it'd be a bit of an adventure without someone having experience with the lines. There's at least two obstacles that I think would be a bit tricky. Not worried about the water hole given wading mode (thank the lord) lol.

Enjoy your time in the area, there are a number of good trails surrounding Flagpole, and it is a neat experience up there!

Oh yeah, I've been there a few times and every time is great. First time up was in a torrential downpour and we had to clear a tree in the driving rain. Very fun!

Update: Peter's Mill is open! We are meeting at Costco in Leesburg at 10am tomorrow morning if anyone is going to join.

I'd be there if I was in town! Have fun, and looking forward to the next trip.

God willing those skid plates will be here for the next one!

Can’t make this one but definitely want to hit some trails soon! Hope you have a great time!

Just found this thread. Flag Pole et al. brings back lots of memories - this was my stomping grounds in the late 80's, but on mountain bikes. I'd like to get in on a H-burg area trip later this year.
