I was out in the Grenadier earlier today and parked up in a quiet spot to admire the view. After few minutes of idle contemplation I was sure I heard a scratching noise coming from the dashboard somewhere. I listened carefully - there it was again, definitely scratching. Damn, mice, I thought. They'll be eating through the wiring loom and costing me £££s worth of damage.
So back home, I was determined to find the source. Eventually, I narrowed it down to somewhere underneath the plastic cover housing the wiper mechanism. i managed to lift up a corner and shine a torch in to see some great big bloody beetles making a home under the wiper motor!

I thought they were maybe cockroaches that had hitched a ride from Hambach but a reverse Google search revealed that they were Dytiscus Latissimus, a large species of aquatic beetle and apparently considered threatened. Quite what they were doing in my Grenadier or how they got there, I have no idea... Anyway, I'm relieved that my wiring is still intact...

I've got them on my wildlife pond. They got there because they can fly very short distances and probably flew on the bonnet.
On a separate note I have replaced the peppermint oil balls under the bonnet of my cars today, a two monthly task. Done to keep mice and other rodents out.

You should start offering your balls to the people of Birmingham you would make a fortune and be happy in the knowledge that your balls are doing good work 🤣

Good tip. I have nightmares about mice wrecking havoc in my garage.

This is about the only insect that hasn't made an appearance on my windscreen in the last week or so!

I'd a bird's nest in my TD5's engine a couple of years ago. Wondered who'd lighten a bonfire while driving one lovely bright May morning, until I figured it was me. Luckily the landy was fine, nest less so.
